What’s love without tragedy? It’s an age old question that we still don’t have an answer for. Love and tragedy. The juxtaposition of these aspects of life is paired so frequently in literature and cinematic history that one might liken them to a “cosmic peanut butter and jelly sandwich.” Romeo and Juliet, Mark Antony and Cleopatra, Bonnie & Clyde–each amazing, but all star-crossed. Enter the premise of A Beautiful Cruel Thing, based on Chad (JoVanni Colon) and Myron (Rico Milan), a couple who has just moved from Atlanta to Miami to get a new lease on life. However, this new lease is hampered by Myron’s health; leaving them with a limited amount of time for their love.

a beautiful cruel thing

A Beautiful Cruel Thing is unique among the web series we have seen that it is a primarily a “mockumentary “(fake documentary) of an ill-fated romance. The series truly centers on their love and experiences, while foreshadowing Myron’s imminent demise. It truly a beautiful, yet cruel thing to experience and watch the love between the two of them knowing in just a matter of time it will end in tragedy. Still, the series is worth watching, and for those hopeless romantics out there it truly tells you that it is better to have love and lost, than to never have loved at all.”  You can watch A Beautiful Cruel Thing when you subscribe by clicking here.

What We Liked

-The mortality throughout the film made the relationship all the more believable and endearing. These men are on borrowed time. You truly have to measure your life in love.

-The execution and cinematography of this series is breathtaking. From the beach scenes, to the lovemaking, even them getting ready for the day. There was love throughout the series in the

-As aforementioned we loved the originality of this web series. There is no other like it! Indeed a mockumentary of an ill-fated romance is worth watching and exploring.

-The series needs a supporting cast. Yes, it is a love story between Myron and Chad, but more characters–friends and/or family–would’ve added depth to the series.

-Some of the scenes dragged on entirely too long. In as series like this some momentum is necessary to keep your attention.

[FIRST LOOK/TEASER TRAILER] Javontae Brownlee (@JavontaeBrownle1) & Lamar Daric Star in “Red Skin” Season 2!

Just when we thought we had seen the last of Red Skin, Arthouse TV pulls one over on us and gives us a first look at a long awaited second season of the critically acclaimed, hit web series. However, things are not the same. The couple we knew and loved to hate, Santana (Karras Jordan) and Kaleb (Kevin Glen), are not the center of this new season. In fact, Red Skin has taken the American Horror Story and About Him approach; becoming an anthology series with a different couple, “Cassius” and “Duke,” played by Javontae Brownlee and Lamar Daric.

There is not much we can tell you about the teaser trailer Arthouse released, but we can tell there is tension between Cassius and Duke. The caption on the poster reads, “Two tortured souls. One tortured love.” Also, those long “over it” and “I’m tired” expressions on their faces do not paint the picture of a loving relationship to be envied.

We would definitely have liked to seen how things played out with Santana and Kaleb a little more, but we have been watching Javontae’s acting in various web series and feel it is time he have a leading role. The second season of Red Skin, is set to debut this summer and we are looking forward to angst, passion, grit, and drama, as we learn yet again how two people so in love, can hate each other just as equally.

(l-r) Maximillian Morten, Anthony Bawn, & Robert Love as “Bretton,” “Angel,” and “Chase,” respectively in “Conframa”

“Conframa,” as explained by Anthony, is a portmanteau of confusion and drama, as became the title of the series when his uncle, mentioned it in regards to a situation he was going through at the time. Indeed, the story line is peppered with a little confusion and drama, as it the gay love triangle you have heard of, but never seen played out. The series has a beautiful cast (We’re serious!) and definitely keeps us on our toes thanks to the humor and antics. We were privy to the first two episodes of the series and can tell you it is definitely worth watching, beautifully filmed and well-acted. However, the series leaves us wanting to see more of the build up and what happens between our “throuple” (three-way couple) when the door closes. You can check out Conframa for yourself by clicking here and subscribing to Bawn TV!

What We Liked

-The cinematography was perfect. Lighting, editing, and sound are principles of any type of filmmaking and this series nailed it.

-The chemistry between the actors is believable and at times comical. Wordplay is the name of the game in Conframa prepare yourself for it.

-Seeing Anthony Bawn back on screen. He is an amazing director, but we forget he is also a good actor.

-New Web Series actors-We love all our Web Stars, but seeing new faces–especially from Los Angeles–just made the Web World a little larger.

What We Loved

-The story line- You always here stories of couples bringing a third person into their relationship, but you never really see how or why it is played out.

-Maximillian Morten you rock! It’s not easy to pull off sexual frustration in a scene, but crawling from that bed to the bathroom was cinematic gold!

-Alexandra McGaughey as “Keisha!” Keisha might as well be the Tiffany Haddish of this series. Every scene with her was nothing short of hilarious. She is easily the voice/mind of the viewer watching this series.

What We Hated

robert love and maximillian morten in conframa here tv h

-The lack of love scenes. In a series with this subject matter, a love scene–tastefully done–would have given the series the spice it is lacking. We see the characters discuss the previous night’s events after hooking up, but what made it great? What did it look like when they were all together? What does Chase do for Angel and Bretton that they cannot do together alone?

-The backstory of why Angel and Bretton decided to even have a threesome needs to be discussed and explained more. Seeing a handsome stranger at a party and deciding to take him home out of the blue is a bit offsetting.

[REVIEW] We’ve Got All The Feels for Here TV’s (@heretv) “Single Man Problems!”

The Web World is always growing. It seems like there is some new web series on an hourly basis. However, one of the things we know the Web World can use is more diversity, especially when it comes to its LGBT web series. “Why so serious?” The Joker asked in “The Dark Knight,” and it’s definitely a question of ours here at HeyMikeyATL. Sure the lives of many LGBT people have been rife with struggles and pain, but there’s a lot of love, laughter, and joy to see as well. So bring on the comedies! Thankfully, the folks over at Here TV have heard our cry and sent a hilarious new web series, Single Man Problems!

Sure the lives of many LGBT people have been rife with struggles and pain, but there’s a lot of love, laughter, and joy to see as well. So bring on the comedies! Thankfully, the folks over at Here TV have heard our cry and sent a hilarious new web series, Single Man Problems!

Single Man Problems centers on a millennial Black Gay man named Ronnie Maxwell (Keefe Grimes) looking for love in all the typical places–namely online! Along the way, he surprisingly and hilariously, faces issues of colorism, becomes a catfish, and deals with balancing the love life of his needy, straight best friend/roommate, Emmanuel (Michel Vidal). Ronnie’s character is highly relatable and adorable. In a 2010’s “kinda world you’ll be glad” to know you got this series to make light of your dating blues! You can check out the series yourself by subscribing to Here TV by clicking here.

Grade: A-

What We Liked

Keefe Grimes as “Ronnie”

-New Web series actors! The genre can definitely use some new players, and we are more than welcoming this new, diverse cast to the game!

-The acting was amazing and on point. The delivery, speed, and chemistry between the characters–even those with minor roles–made this series flow and POP!

What We Loved

Single Man Problems here tv

(l-r) Michel Vidal, Shaniqua J. West, and Keefe Grimes in “Single Man Problems” (2019)

-Keefe Grimes you are our new best friend! Issa Rae may be our favorite “Awkward Black Girl;”  but as “Ronnie” you are definitely in the running to being our “Insecure Black Guy.”

-The friendship between Ronnie and Emmanuel. It’s high time we see more platonic friendships between gay and straight (we don’t mean bi-curious or questioning) men in film. They are boys and it shows in their banter and chemistry!

-The series captivates you from the jump. It’s relatability is hilariously and amazingly frightening. We cannot wait to see what is next for Ronnie!

What We Hated

-Each episode definitely needs to be longer! At least thirty minutes. Just as we get pulled in we are left wanting more.

-We need to see more of Emmanuel’s girlfriend, Melinda (Shaniqua J. West). Hopefully there’s more background info for her in future episodes. We do not need her in the backdrop.
