Bawn TV never fails to deliver quality content. The dramas, movies, series, and projects on the network’s platforms continues to grow; the latest of these being its new movie, District, loosely based on Tyson Anthony’s novel, Hood Goods.

bawn tv's district

As you may already know, District began as a web series starring Brandon Anthony and Tami Roman, however, after a “tift” between Tami and production the series scrapped and made into a film. We have to say this was a surprising move on behalf of Bawn TV, but definitely an appropriate one.

District tells the story of Miller (Brandon Anthony) a young man who grew up in the projects and had to raise himself after his mother (Tami Roman) was incarcerated after defending him from his abusive father.

Miller is strong, independent, and compassionate, but has a weakness for his friend, Trayvon (Jeffery Erskine), a crack addict. On top of all this drama, Miller seeks to find a way out of the projects with a little help from less than savory friends.

Overall District could have easily been one of the greatest web series ever produced, and we hate to see it end. (Is a recast possible?) Brandon, Tami, and Jeffery are all amazing actors, and this story hits a little too close to home if you are gay and stuck in inner city life. Still, it is definitely award worthy and even more interesting is Brandon Karson’s role in the film. We do not want to give anything away, but you have NEVER seen him in a role like this one. It is a true testament to his growth as an actor and his rising star power. You can see District subscribing to for yourself by Bawn TV. Happy viewing!

Really? Black Panther (@blackpanther) Criticized for No LGBT Representation!

Marvel’s Black Panther is definitely the number one movie in the country and hopefully the world if it continues on this historic track. Although the film is enjoyed and critically praised by people everywhere, some members of the LGBT community seem a bit ticked off at the Black Panther’s lack of queer characters.

Marvel’s Black Panther is definitely the number one movie in the country and hopefully the world if it continues on this historic track. Although the film is enjoyed and critically praised by people everywhere, some members of the LGBT community seem a bit ticked off at the Black Panther’s lack of queer characters.

Apparently in the comics, two of Black Panther’s Dora Milaje  (female personal body guards and potential wives from each tribe of Wakanda), Aneka and Ayo, are in a lesbian relationship. Last year some fans were thrilled at the possibility of the Marvel showing its first openly gay couple, but when those same fans attended the Black Panther screening, they were outraged that no mention or hint at any same-sex love existed between any members of the Dora Milaje.

Ayo and Aneka in “Black Panther” comics

Black Panther’s screenwriter has opened up about the lesbian romance which was cut from the film.

When the film was announced, fans were excited by the prospect of Okoye and Ayo,two of the title character’s bodyguards, getting together as Ayo and fellow female warrior Aneka do in the comics.

And these hopes were encouraged by reports that an early screening of the film featured Walking Dead star Danai Gurira’s Okoye staring at Ayo flirtatiously as the two danced.

The enthusiasm provoked by this turned to frustration and claims of LGBT erasureafter Marvel quickly denied the conclusions drawn by those who watched the scene.

A Marvel spokesperson reached out to clearly state that “the nature of the relationship between Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Florence Kasumba’s Ayo in Black Panther is not a romantic one.”

This sparked a movement around the hashtag #LetAyoHaveAGirlfriend, similar to the #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend campaign last May prompted by the release of Captain America: Civil War.

Unfortunately, it was unsuccessful.

In fact, in the final version of the film, Okoye is depicted as straight and in a relationship with W’Kabi, played by Daniel Kaluuya.

Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole, who has been nominated for an Emmy for his work on American Crime Story, talked to ScreenCrush about what fans have called lesbian erasure.

We are  definitely down for the LGBT community, but we do not think this should take away from the film overall. There will be other opportunities for LGBT characters to shine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What are your thoughts? Leave them in the comments section below!

[REVIEW] The BLACK & BEAUTIFUL! Marvel’s “Black Panther” (@theblackpanther)–Movie & MOVEMENT!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken us to many amazing places–most of which defy logic. Just think in the course of its history we have visited far away planets, floating cities, and alternate dimensions. Still, it’s most interesting jewel is none other than the tiny African nation of Wakanda, Earth’s most advanced civilization, ruled by its monarch and superhero, the Black Panther!

Black Panther is easily one of Marvel’s most anticipated films to date, and easily its most anticipated stand alone film to date!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken us to many amazing places–most of which defy logic. Just think in the course of its history we have visited far away planets, floating cities filled with gods, and alternate dimensions. Still, it’s most interesting jewel is none other than the tiny African nation of Wakanda, Earth’s most advanced civilization, ruled by its monarch and superhero, the Black Panther!

Black Panther is easily one of Marvel’s most anticipated films to date, and easily its most anticipated stand alone film to date!

wakanda

The story begins with the retelling of Wakandan history, and how a meteorite of vibranium–the strongest, most valuable, and rarest metal on Earth–fell to Africa and changed the surrounding areas plants and animals. Millions of years later, the humans that settled formed five warring tribes who only found peace when a chieftan, the first Black Panther, blessed by the Panther god, Bast, united them under one nation. The tribes used the vibranium to shield their country from the outside world and defend its borders; avoiding invasion and colonization like other African countries.

Flash forward to the 21st Century and the story line picks up shortly after the events of Captain America: Civil War. T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns to Wakanda to take his rightful place as king, following the death of his father, T’Chaka. He soon learns all too well, however, that “heavy is the head that wears the crown.” This means the revelation of family secrets, state affairs, and even questioning Wakanda’s position in the world.

Unbeknownst to T’Challa his entire world–and to an extension the world at large–are about to be threatened by the unholy alliance of Ulysses Klaw a murderous thief obsessed with stealing vibranium and Eric Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), a Black militant with his own personal connection to Wakanda. T’Challa has to really his own inner strength, face the mistakes of the past, and rally his family and closest allies to once again save the world!

black panther movie

Black Panther is truly a marvel–pun intended–with so much action and adventure that you’re average moviegoer will find themselves in heaven throughout the film. HOWEVER, the REVOLUTION went cinematicwith this film with its messages of Black empowerment, militance, history, female empowerment, and nation building. The annotations of the Middle Passage, the oppression of African people throughout the world, and a call to action are boldly planted in this film. In a way you feel a sense of camaradarie, family, and togetherness as a person of color when you gather in the theater to see Black Panther. T’Challa may be just another black superhero to some, but to many Black people he is a powerful example of what is inside of each of us–a king or a queen, but always a warrior! The fight for what is right and even an equal playing will always be arduous, but after seeing this movie I have never felt more hopeful.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out.  In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard.  Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them!  Can he fly?  Does he have X-ray vision?  Can he shoot lightning out of his hands?  Can he skip his social studies test?  Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child.  But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

“Shazam!” also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“IT”) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (TV’s “This is Us”); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat”); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”).  Cooper Andrews (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Marta Milans (TV’s “Killer Women”) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez, with Ron Cephas Jones (“This is Us”) as the Wizard.

Christopher Godsick, Jeffrey Chernov, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia are serving as executive producers.

Sandberg’s creative team includes his “Annabelle: Creation” director of photography Maxime Alexandre, production designer Jennifer Spence, editor Michel Aller and costume designer Leah Butler.

Set primarily in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, principal photography for the film is taking place in Toronto.

Firmly set in the DC universe but with his own distinctly fun, family-centric tone, the character first appeared in Whiz Comics in 1940 and was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck.
