Freeform continues to push the envelope with some pretty amazing series targeting teens and young adults. With shows like The Fosters, Famous In Love, and the black-ish spin-off, grown-ish on its line up the fledgling network is totally winning right now! Well it looks like Marvel Comics is getting in the mix as its studios have partnered with Freeform to bring the dynamic duo of Cloak & Dagger!

Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt as “Tyrone Johnson/Cloak & Tandy Bowen/Dagger”

The series centers on teens, Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) two teens from opposite sides of the track. Tandy begins her life in a well to do family that becomes unraveled after a car accident kills her father, while Tyrone’s older brother is unwittingly murdered by the police. Their lives–and powers–are then intertwined by energy released from a freak accident. Flash forward to their teenage years and Tandy has become a criminal and impoverished, while Tyrone is a star basketball player from a well to do family. After years apart their paths cross and their powers emerge. Tyrone finds he can transport himself through shadows over great distances while Tandy can create light and daggers of light. The two began to explore not only their shared past, but destinies…as it is rumored one of them will die! Are you #TeamCloak or #TeamDagger?

ultimate universe cloak and dagger

In case you didn’t know, Cloak & Dagger are superheroes in the Marvel Universe who serve primarily as a scourge to the drug and criminal underworld and have at time fought alongside other superheroes like Captain America, Spider-Man, and The X-Men! The heroes are sort of a walking yin and yang. Cloak’s body is mostly a long cloak that allows him to teleport; and contains The Darkforce Dimension, a pocket dimension that he can trap people in forever. Dagger can fire beams of light and solidify light into daggers that can stun or cause others excruciating pain.

We attended an advance screening for the first episode of the series last night and we have to say it was amazing. Held at Landmark’s Midtown Art Cinema Theater in Atlanta, the event was filled with fun, food, and really cool photo booths! We really love this series and how it tackles some pretty important topics like racism, assault, police brutality, poverty, and substance abuse. When you see how race and class play a role in their lives you will find these characters to be more and more relatable. Aubrey and Olivia are amazing actors who really deliver on these heroes. We hope they will be connected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe or even other outlying shows like Runaways.

Be sure you catch the series premiere of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, Thursday June 7th only on Freeform!

Rhythm + Flow stands out from other music competition series like American Idol and The Voice in its subject matter and rap/hip-hop roots, and with how it is being released via Netflix. Usually, Netflix releases all the episodes of it series at once allowing viewers to binge watch, however, Rhythm + Flow consists of nine episodes with three episodes being released each week until the finale. This is actually an idea TI suggested. “I didn’t want people just being able to go to the last episode, missing the journey, and spoiling it for everyone…I was like something like this has to be approached differently. ” TI’s input and wisdom are definitely an asset on the show, offering pertinent advice to competitors contrasting Chance’s straightforward approach and Cardi’s hilarious quips. “I bring longevity to the mix, because in this rap game you’ve got to have that to make your mark. Re-branding, evolving, and knowing how to hustle is what I’m teaching.”

The show eliminates contestants through cyphers, rap battles, live performances, and music videos that allow them to tell their backstories. TI admits the hardest part of being a judge is watching someone be eliminated that he feels would have won if they would have made it further in the competition. When asked if he is signing anyone that was eliminated he replies: “No comment.”

We cannot wait for you all to see Rhythm + Flow! Catch it on Netflix today!

There seems to be a time lapse in between Seasons 3 and 4 as Glimmer, Queen Angella’s daughter has become Queen of Bright Moon, and has a new more mature look. Meanwhile, Catra becomes the leader of The Horde, unaware Hordak Prime is prepared to raze Etherea. Adora, however, explores her connection even more so to She-Ra, learning she is far more than just a sword toting warrior princess. She is instead, a protector with a greater destiny than she, her friends, allies, or enemies know.

This LGBT friendly series continues to up the ante while paying homage to the original series. The depth, the design, and the storytelling is profound and complex. We cannot wait for the new season! What do you think of the new trailer for She-Ra & The Princesses of Power? Sound off in the comments’ section below!

Dear ABC we love you! This network continues to delivery on diversity and hits with its milestone television series that tell the most amazing stories.  The latest of these hits is none other than black-ish’s latest spinoff, mixed-ish!

mixed-ish cast

The series is a prequel to black-ish,  and based on Rainbow “Bow” Johnson’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) childhood as she transitioned from living on a commune to the real world. An additional kick arises as she and her siblings must learn to navigate the world as biracial children during a time when being “mixed” was still taboo.

This a series you can’t help but love as it tackles issues of conformity, being a Black woman in America, and how so many biracial children fill forced to pick a side when it comes to their ethnicity. It is wonderfully written and the cast is all-star with the likes of Mark Paul Gosselaar, Tika Sumpter, and more. We recently attended a screening for the first episode at Regal Hollywood 24 in Chamblee, GA. There, guests were able to take photos with a mixed-ish  background at the photo booth and were treated to beverages and snacks.

The series premiere of mixed-ish Tuesday,  September 24 at 9 PM EST! Check out the theme song of the series performed by Mariah Carey, In The Mix, below!
