The iconic broadcast continues to tackle culturally relevant topics and conversations, delivering some of the most memorable moments in Award show history. In 2017, Bruno Mars opened the show with a funky, energetic performance of his hit “Perm,” then returned to the stage moments later to accept his first-ever BET Awards win for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, XSCAPE reunited for the first time in eighteen years to perform a medley of hits, “Understanding,” “Who Can I Run to,” and, “Just Kickin’ It,” Yara Shahidi voiced the importance of supporting blackness and thanked BET for celebrating black culture so beautifully while accepting the YoungStars Award, and Michelle Obama and BET Chairman Debra Lee introduced Chance the Rapper who gave an impassioned speech after receiving the evening’s Humanitarian Award. The “BET Awards” raises the standard, year over year, for one of the most intently unconventional, news-provoking and talked-about broadcasts.

BET Networks recognizes artists, entertainers, and athletes across over 19 categories with the “BET Awards” 2018 nominations. The nominations are selected by BET’s Voting Academy, which is comprised of fans and an esteemed group of entertainment professionals in the fields of television, film, music, social media, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations, and the creative arts.

Jake Borelli and Niko Terho

Starring Grey’s Anatomy’s Jake Borelli and newcomer Niko Terho, the film follows two former high school enemies who are trapped sharing a car together on a long road tip to a mutual friend’s engagement party. A classic rom-com setup, and I’m already hooked!

Things start heating up when Sam (Borelli), who has been out since high school, finds out that Harry (Terho) is also gay and that they have a lot more in common then they originally thought. Like the title, the plot is a nod to When Harry Met Sally, one of the most classic of all rom-coms. According to a press release, the pair “begin to develop a deep friendship — with neither admitting a potential romance may be brewing — leaving them wondering if one road trip could change the rest of their lives.” I, for one, am fully onboard with all of this.

Sam is described as a “handsome, funny, neurotic, intelligent gay man” with “a scathing wit” and “an overly idealistic worldview” who was bullied in high school for being gay. Harry, meanwhile, is an “emotionally uncomplicated, promiscuous player” who “yearns for love, family and stability” deep underneath his player veneer. Opposites really do attract!

The cast also includes Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown as Paul, a gay man who is “exceedingly well put-together” but “overbearing and pretentious”; GLOW’s Britt Baron as Sam’s best friend; and Queer As Folk’s Peter Paige (who also directs), as Sam’s roommate.

In a statement, executive producers Paige, Greg Gugliotta, and F.J. Denny it’s been an honor giving gays the rom-com they deserve.

“True equality can only be achieved when you see yourself reflected in the movies, music and stories that paint our culture,” they said. “As young gay men in the 90s, whenever a rom-com opened, we would watch the leading lady fall in love, and imagine what it would be like if the boy was saying all those things to another boy.” Awwww same, but with lesbians.

“We’ve always wanted to make a movie — an unabashedly romantic comedy — that queer boys wouldn’t have to translate,” the team added. “It’s rewarding to take the genre to a new, all-inclusive level.”

The Thing About Harry will premiere in February 2020 just in time for a very gay Valentine’s Day.

Slay Queen! Queen Latifah (@IAMQUEENLATIFAH) Steals The Show as “Ursula” in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid LIVE!”

Disney’s The Little Mermaid is hands down one of the beloved in animated movies in history, thus it is no surprise it has been adapted into a live musical for television audiences. All of our favorite singles from the movie were there including “Part Of Your World,” “Under The Sea,” and “Kiss The Girl,” but it was Queen Latifah as Ursula giving life to her signature song, “Poor, Unfortunate Souls” that took–and saved–the show!

All of our favorite singles from the movie were there including “Part Of Your World,” “Under The Sea,” and “Kiss The Girl,” but it was Queen Latifah as Ursula giving life to her signature song, “Poor, Unfortunate Souls” that took–and saved–the show!

Queen Latifah really brought it with this role. We actually would prefer to see her reprise this role in the live action adaptation set for 2021 alongside Halle Bailey. All too often we forget that not only is the Queen an amazing actress, but a songstress as well. As you recall she was amazing in Chicago (2002) as “Mama Morton,” and she shows her range in a previous album, Dana Owens (2004). Without her performance in the show it would have been otherwise drab and disappointing. Every move, sashay, and evil laugh screamed diva/sea witch in control!

The other actors gave it their best shot, but truthfully we were disappointed with Shaggy and Auliʻi Cravalho’s (Sebastian and Ariel, respectively). Both were lackluster and bland. Auli’i’s voice lacked the warmth and strength we love from Ariel of a curious [mer]girl determined to be her true self, and Shaggy—well–he clearly missed some rehearsals. His timing was off and his costume was terrible. The only thing he and Sebastian had in common were the color he was wearing and a Jamaican accent. To put it plainly, thank God for Queen Latifah!

Yikes! BET Cancels Tyler Perry’s “The Oval” After Its First Season!

The verdict is in and Tyler Perry’s “The Oval” is a “no go” with viewers! In fact, BET has opted no to renew the series after its first season due to complaints about the series including its acting, scenes of domestic violence, and alleged poor lighting. As you may already know, the series premiered last week to amazing ratings, and was paired with another series Tyler Perry series, “Sista.” “The Oval” is expected to be replaced by “Bruh,” a series that is apparently already in the works.

The Cast of “The Oval”

The Oval opened with Hunter Franklin (Ed Quinn), the newly elected president of the United States, and his handsome wife Victoria (Kron Moore) fighting like cats and dogs in the private residence of the White House. The scene was a literal slap in the face to Black women who tuned in to see a regal Black First Lady represented in Tyler’s White House drama.

The Oval premiered with strong ratings. But the viewer complaints were plentiful. Many complained about the acting, the domestic violence scenes, the sparsely decorated sets, and the poor lighting.

The latter is probably due to Tyler’s ongoing disagreements with local motion picture and TV electrical lighting unions.

Tyler reportedly won’t employ union workers on his sets because they demand too much money. So he makes do without paying high union dues. The result are shadowy sets that look like they were illuminated with flashlights and an open refrigerator door.

People in the know say Tyler shelled out millions for his star-studded studio opening extravaganza earlier this month – which left little money in the budget for his shows.

Tyler probably isn’t worried about this current failure. He knows he has enough faithful fans to keep the lights on – even if he doesn’t have enough technicians to work those lights.

Yikes! We really hope Tyler’s future shows fare better. “Sistas,” however does deserve a chance. It very well could be “Girlfriends” (2000) for millenials. We wish the cast and crew the best of luck on future endeavors. What do you all think of the cancellation of “The Oval?” Sound off in the comments section below!
