Atlanta is always poppin’ Labor Day weekend–Dragon Con, Labor Day cookouts and vacations, and of course Black Gay Pride! The city was full of events, but few of them matched the fervor or were as outstanding as the Third Annual Queer Black Film Festival sponsored by Vision Church of Atlanta at The Georgian Terrace Hotel.

There, Black LGBT filmmakers, producers, actors, directors,  screenwriters, and showrunners from across the country gathered together to share their expertise, craft, and most of all their own amazing work.

Hosted by local filmmaker, Courtney Walter and Onyx Keesha, the festivities began on Friday afternoon with a actors’ workshop hosted by Rhavynn Drummer. Later that evening a screening of Davien Harlis’s critically acclaimed film, Red Carpet, Hashtags, & Heartbreak was held with a Q & A with with Davien and other cast members from the film. The fun did not stop there, however, as on Saturday a panel was held, discussing the portrayal of Black gay characters in the media. The panelists were directors, filmmakers, producers, and actors; each with a different, refreshing perspective. Following the panel discussion, five different projects were screened; including Commute, Parallel The Documentary, and Eden’s Garden.

Finally, and excitingly, the event ended at Piedmont Park where the winners from the weekend were given various awards for best screenwriting, overall work, and best story. Needless to say the Third Annual Queer Black Film Festival is a wonderful event. The hosts were amazing, the venue was outstanding, and getting to meet so many Black LGBT people in the film industry was empowering and impressive. The festival serves as a stark reminder that there really is a place in the world for everyone who desires to express themselves. We definitely cannot wait for next year’s festival and you can be sure we will be front line and center! Happy Pride everyone!

The heartfelt gesture brought tears to her eyes.

Several notable faces Love And Hip Hop Stars Masika and Cisco stopped and showed support.  Masika having to deal with Internet Bullying all the time. Fashion is always a must at any Atlanta event, there were definitely a lot of cute outfits but one stood out to me the most, a pretty in pink sequins dress, with silver and white tribal pattern, but it was a wrap dress that looked like a robe.  I just had to stop her. I found out Ms Shanita is the designer and curator of S. Denton Collection and this was one of her pieces. Her collection is unique, fun, sexy and she’s bringing back sequins!!! YC Entertainment, came through in support for Ms. Deb. Singer/Songwriter, Kody, made a donation as well as ended off the night with giving us a brief performance. Courvoisier handed out gift tee’s, while Atlanta’s DJ Baby Face closed the night out with a mixture of old school favorites and today’s Hip Hop.

The night overall was in efforts to shine the light and spread awareness of Mental Health within our communities. As well as ending internet bullying by way of art and education based programs into schools. Courvoisier, Holiday Inn Express, Kontrol Magazine and Atlanta’s Signs sponsored the event.  Star Passion Foods Catering provided a delicious Creamy Garlic Chicken Alfredo, with broccoli, mushrooms and parmesan cheese and a DIY fresh fields salad, choice of strawberry, cucumber, blueberries and a raspberry vinaigrette or ranch dressing and a side of butter soft garlic bread. Courvoisier had a selection of “summer themed” cocktails and their entire staff were exceptionally attentive. The night was great, I personally had a lot of fun and I am very interested in lending a helping hand t the children at James H Brown Elementary.
