The film is beautifully filmed as it retells Harriet’s story firsthand with the acting skills of Cynthia Erivo. Harriet is born enslaved on a plantation in Maryland in 1822, where she alongside her mother, brothers, and only sister plead for their freedom from their master due to a clause left his father’s will. Their master refuses and is “cursed” by Harriet, coincidentally dying in his sleep that night. Her new, younger master blames her for his father’s death and inheriting the debt he left behind. He coldly decides to sell Harriet and her brothers to traders headed to the Deep South, a place where freedom or escaping is virtually impossible. Harriet, determined to be free, and have her own future children born free flees! Using nature and navigating her way to Philadelphia via The North Star she makes a new life for herself. However, Harriet is even more determined to liberate her family prompting a daring rescue attempt that transforms her from a simple runaway slave fueled by superstition to the legend we know and idolize.

This event was great! Check out a few photos from this awesome night below, and catch Harriet in theaters nationwide on Friday, November 1st! Happy viewing!

[EVENT RECAP] “grown-ish & broke!” Essence & Freeform Tackle College Debt w/ African-American Graduates on Spelman College!

College debt is something many Americans know all too well. In fact, according to Forbes, it affects forty-four million Americans who collectively owe 1.46 trillion dollars!  However, of that population it is African-American college graduates who are disproportionately affected. One in two of them default on their loans at some point in the twelve years following college, they tend to carry more student debt loans, and graduates of History Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) take on thirty-two percent more debt than students at other colleges.

Recently, at Spelman College, Essence and Freeform collaborated on an event, “grown-ish x broke,” to show a screening of the latest episode of Freeform’s hit series, grown-ish (2018) which tackled and informed students on student debt and some solutions they could use to alleviate or solve them.
