NBC’s newest series, The Village, is undoubtedly turning out to be one of its greatest. Set in an eclectic apartment building in Brooklyn, it centers on a group of close knit neighbors whose lives, love, problems, and social issues all intertwine in heartwarming and heartbreaking ways making them a family of sorts. Heading this family as a patriarch is none other than Frankie Faison as “Ron Davis!” Ron is wise, funny, and of course the backbone of his makeshift dishing out love and wisdom where needed. HeyMikeyATL and Kontrol Magazine recently attended an NBC Luncheon filled with the other “Who’s Who” of Atlanta’s media community and got the opportunity for a sit down interview with Frankie himself!

Frankie has been in the in the entertainment industry for over forty years, with dozens of roles, and is known best for his roles on The Wire (2002) and the Hannibal Lecter franchise. At the luncheon Frankie discussed the secret to his career’s longevity and how his own village greatly impacted his life. “…I’ve had really thoughtful and impactful people in my life since elementary school–my whole community actually. I grew up in an all-black community and the people in my life saw I was a character, a real class clown [he laughs], but instead of punishing me or writing me off as a bad kid; they put me in the theater…there I was able to grow and cultivate and become the character I am today [he laughs].

As “Ron Davis,” Frankie embodies so much strength and understanding on the show, and when combined with the talents of Lorraine Toussaint, portraying Ron’s wife, “Patricia Davis,” you have quite a powerful, earthy couple. Frankie went on to discuss why he chose to do The Village, what it is like working with Lorraine, and his similarities and dissimilarities to his character. “He [‘Ron’] is the head of this chosen family of people–that’s what friends are, the family you choose–and he is a wise, upstanding, strong guy and I can identify with that. He’s like the ‘mayor’ of the neighborhood…then he likes to give wisdom to others and I find myself dispensing wisdom to the youngins on the set [he laughs]…I loved the script for The Village, it was well-written and I loved the stories. I’m down for any project that I can connect to and grow from. He then went on to discuss Lorraine. “When I found out she was on board I was thrilled. We came up in the industry together and she’s a respected colleague. She was perfect for the role and I can see us being the parents and grandparents of this situation…”

Frankie Faison is nothing short of amazing, encouraging rising and aspiring actors and entertainers to “Never give up. If this is what you want to do stay at it, believe in it, grow with it, and just don’t stop!” You can catch Frankie every Tuesday night, 10 PM EST!

The film is beautifully filmed as it retells Harriet’s story firsthand with the acting skills of Cynthia Erivo. Harriet is born enslaved on a plantation in Maryland in 1822, where she alongside her mother, brothers, and only sister plead for their freedom from their master due to a clause left his father’s will. Their master refuses and is “cursed” by Harriet, coincidentally dying in his sleep that night. Her new, younger master blames her for his father’s death and inheriting the debt he left behind. He coldly decides to sell Harriet and her brothers to traders headed to the Deep South, a place where freedom or escaping is virtually impossible. Harriet, determined to be free, and have her own future children born free flees! Using nature and navigating her way to Philadelphia via The North Star she makes a new life for herself. However, Harriet is even more determined to liberate her family prompting a daring rescue attempt that transforms her from a simple runaway slave fueled by superstition to the legend we know and idolize.

This event was great! Check out a few photos from this awesome night below, and catch Harriet in theaters nationwide on Friday, November 1st! Happy viewing!

Before showing the screenings consecutively Mr. Perry himself thanked the guest in attendance and expressed his happiness to be working with BET. He felt theirs was a partnership that has been long overdue and even hinted there may be more series in the works. The first series to be shown was “Sistas.” The series is a modern day “Girlfriends” based on four very different Black women as they collectively endure the trials of relationships, careers, dating, and of course their own friendships. Naturally, the men in their lives play key roles; from cheating husbands and boyfriends, gay best friends, and to one who’s sexuality is left to be determined. This is the series we have been waiting for! “Girlfriends” with a millennial twist is right on time!

The Cast of “Sistas”

“The Oval,” unlike “Sistas” is truly about disharmony. In this series, which seems to be a portmanteau of “Scandal” and “Tyler Perry’s The Haves & The Nots!” The series begins with a bang in the form of an unexpected domestic fight between the President and First Lady of The United States shortly before their Inauguration, meanwhile the White House butler’s family deals with not only rape accusations with his son and the First Daughter, but a cult trying to steal his granddaughter! Elsewhere, the Chief of Staff’s wife is embroiled in a torrid affair! Your heart will race, your jaw will drop as you are left reeling and waiting for the next twist and turn in this amazing series!

You can catch “Sistas” and “The Oval” on BET, airing Wednesday, October 23rd! Check out more pictures from the night’s events below!

Movie Reviews

Nothing’s Black & White in “Black & Blue” (@BlackBlueMovie)! Naomie Harris (@NaomieHarris) SHINES!

Our nation is in turmoil. We live in a time where distrust in law enforcement is at an all time high thanks to police brutality, racism, and general apathy. The notion of “bad cops” and closing ranks when it comes to law enforcement has become so prevalent that it seems to be the norm. However, there are good police officers out there, they just have to be willing to take a stand. “Black & Blue,” starring Naomie Harris, tells the story of Alicia West, a rookie cop in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, a crime ridden area that never quite recovered from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Alicia, having left to serve two tours in the army, returns wanting to keep her hometown safe. However, nothing is as she quite remembers including the friends she once knew and the officers she serves with. Viewed as an outsider she witnesses a crooked cop executing local gang members to cover up they were working for him. Alicia records it on body cam and a manhunt pursues as she must get the footage back to the precinct before a group of corrupt cops and gangster can take her down.

This film was EVERYTHING! At first glance you would not think Naomie can be an action star, but she pulled it off in this thriller. The film and story are so powerful and relatable. As minorities in the country, many of us have either lost faith or questioned if the police are here to keep us safe or are power hungry and oppressive. Pairing her with Tyrese was also genius. In this film we find him portraying, “Milo ‘Mouse’ Jackson,”  a former ex-con with PTSD from horrible run-ins with the police. The two are quite the dynamic duo as they fight for justice, understanding, empathy, and truly for their lives.

The screening for “Black & Blue” was hosted by media personality and host, Xilla Valentine, via his super popular #XillaMovieParty events. It all went down at Studio Movie Grill in Marietta, Ga where guests were treated to popcorn and drinks! Xilla is cool, funny, and definitely down to earth we look forward to meeting him again soon. You all just be sure to catch, “Black And Blue” in theaters everywhere, Friday October 25th! Happy viewing!
