Just when we thought we had seen everything Atlanta has to offer, a new jewel comes into the spotlight. This time around, however, it is not a half-baked event, or yet another “socialite,” but instead a lounge–JosephineHeyMikeyATL and Kontrol Magazine were in the building for a food tasting where noted, local food bloggers were invited to taste select menu items, try their signature hookahs, and experience the ambiance. We have to say we were enchanted and enlightened, not only by the lounge itself, but the kind staff, great food, and inviting energy!

Grade: A+

Josephine, named after the first (and only) Empress of France, Josephine Bonaparte, a truly elegant woman; this lounge is one regal and beautiful place where you can go party and unwind from the day or work week. Settled in the bosom of Brookhaven, a prominent northeastern neighborhood in Atlanta, Josephine’s is the place to be. The business has been running for five years, began by restauranteur, Serge Herve. His love for fine wine and fine dining was developed in Paris where it has developed into a true culinary art form.

The menu is amazing, offering your typical bar foods like wings, fries, and cocktails, but other special include dishes like shrimp and bacon fried rice, a crab broil plate, Korean barbecue prepared Philly cheese steak style, and of course lobster fritters and mac and cheese! YUM! We gorged–yes gorged, the servings were plentiful on the former two dishes while ordering margaritas and cocktails. The food was prepared by Chef Matt (@myculinarytable), a true food connoissuer who brought his own background and experience to the lounge, making the menu different from your typical bar-like establishment. “I wanted people to try something out of the ordinary when it comes to a lounge experience. Josephine’s is an amazing place and you should have equally amazing food when you come here to have fun…bring your friends, have events, this is the place to be.” Being that the lounge boasts a huge bar and bottle service with the best spirits and liquor, even the simplest drinks are well made and leave you a little buzzed. This is always good after a stressful day.

Josephine is open five days a week with each day boasting a different theme:

  • World Class Fridays (10 pm to 2:30 am)
  • Passport Tuesdays (10 pm to 2:30 am)
  • Sin Sundays (10 pm to 2:30 am)
  • Seafood Night – Monday (5 pm to 12 am)
  • Seafood Night – Tuesday (5 pm to 12 am)

We personally will definitely be going back to one of their Seafood Nights! Josephine is a Black, Native African, owned business and is seeking to give the people of Atlanta a new, fun, safe place to be themselves. It also serves as a venue for events when requested. With the experience we had there, there is no doubt this place will be a hit. Grab your purses, wallets, and fanny packs. It’s time to PARTY!

The cocktails, food, atmosphere, and staff are intoxicating, delicious, effervescent, and amazing!

Recently we attended a tasting at Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen Restaurant & Bar on press day where many of Atlanta’s top media personalities and outlets were invited to taste various meals and above mentioned cocktails. We were floored by the deliciousness and variety of the meals offered all inspired by the Gullah communities (via Wikipedia: “African Americans who live in the Lowcountry region of the U.S. states of Georgia and South Carolina, in both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands. They developed a creole language, the Gullah language, and a culture rich in African influences that makes them distinctive among African Americans) of The Carolinas. The food is not your typical soul food, but instead is heavily influenced by African culture with tastes of African-American epithets. Our favorite meals, however, were seafood-based–crab rice and macaroni and seafood salad is tasty, filling and rich.

You can’t call any venue a true bar if it does not have its own signature cocktails and spirits. Thankfully Virgil’s has plenty! Each of these drinks, like the meals, are inspired by fruits and liquors popular within the Gullah community. You definitely get a tropical, yet adult feel from the drinks that give you that “end of the day buzz” you need to coax you to a wonderful night of sleep. Our favorite drinks are the Chuck Town Tini (their version of a vodka gamut), The Lookya (A refreshing summertime, adult lemonade), and the Geechirita (margaritas made with patron or Hennessy).

Atlanta has been low on hang out spots with the recent closings of a number of clubs and bars throughout the metro area, however this family owned business may be a step in the right direction towards some trendy, fun, and still wholesome fun. “Virgil’s is for everybody! We are family, the community is our family, our family works here, and there’s no such thing as a stranger here.” Co-owner, Gee Sessions says. We have to agree, and add that it is also inclusive with restrooms open to all genders. By 2024, The United Nations estimates the world’s population will hit eight billion, and then nine billion by 2042; and we still do not have an answer for world hunger. Well some scientists are suggesting the insect population may be the answer to our problems; suggesting dishes like maggot sausage and insect produced ice cream ,to name a few!

One Australian researcher hopes to change that. University of Queensland Meat Science Professor Louwrens Hoffman is exploring how maggots, locusts and other “alternative” proteins might be used or added to a range of specialty foods.
So why turn to bugs when you could have, say, a tasty steak? Quite simply, Hoffman believes conventional livestock will not be able to meet the global demand for meat, so alternatives are needed to replace or at least complement traditional protein sources.

“The biggest potential for sustainable protein production lies with insects and new plant sources,” he said in a statement.
Studies show that Western consumers who may recoil from the idea of eating insect-based meals will try insects if they are processed and disguised — tucked inside familiar favorites as it were, Hoffman said.
“For example, one of my students has created a very tasty insect ice-cream,” he said.
Entomophagy, the scientific word for eating insects, is commonly practiced in at least 113 countries, according to a recent study. And with more than 2,000 documented edible species, insects have won the approval of the United Nations, which recommends them as a potential solution to the global food shortage. Add to that they’re environmentally friendly and can be produced with a fraction of the gas emissions that go into livestock production, while nutritional studies have shown insects to be a good source of protein by weight, though fat and vitamin content vary across species.
Feeling disgust helps us stay healthy, study says

A portion of Hoffman’s research focuses on chickens. “Poultry is a massive industry worldwide and the industry is under pressure to find alternative proteins that are more sustainable, ethical and green than the grain crops currently being used,” he said. He is looking at the potential use of larvae (maggots) from the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) as a protein source for chicken production.
“Chickens in the wild don’t eat feed preparations. They eat insects and larvae,” he explained. “It’s all pretty logical.”
The evidence is on his side: When broiler chicken diets include up to 15% larvae meal, chicken production as well as breast meat aroma, flavor, juiciness and tenderness are not compromised, his research finds.
They say “to a hungry man, food is God.” Global hunger does need a solution and we will have to figure out a way to feed our ever growing population. We are no fan of eating insects either, but we guess in the not too distant future, desperate times will cost desperate measures.

Events like these–and the surprises and drama–only have us even more stoked for the eleventh season of RHOA. As an Atlanta native and resident of The Peach State I was all too excited when Seagram’s announced the Peach Bellini flavor of their wine cooler collection. The beverage is sweet and refreshing; and smooth enough to actually serve as a chaser when you combine it with vodka! Happy drinking, and as always, DRINK RESPONSIBLY!
