We thought the age of Blaxploitation films was over, but thankfully there is some nostalgia in the air still. Sony seems intent on capitalizing on that in its latest film, starring Taraji P. Henson, in Proud Mary!

The film centers on Mary (Taraji P. Henson), a guilt-ridden hitwoman/mob enforcer who takes in an orphan, Danny (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) after killing his father. Mary is determined to make amends for what has transpired in Danny’s life after and goes after a drug lord from a rival mob family for it. The consequences are immense as she must soon find a way to cover her tracks, protect Danny, and finally leave the mob for good–something that is far easier said than done!

We have to say this film was just “okay.” What we really liked, of course, was the action. It was good seeing Taraji branch out into an action role. She definitely did that! The fight and shooting scenes were superb. Jahi Winston really sells the role of the troubled street kid that you cannot help but love. He and Taraji have great chemistry in a “faux mother-son” kind of way. Surprisingly, we saw Danny Glover and Margaret Avery reunite! As you know they were “Mister/Albert” and “Shug Avery” from The Color Purple.

What we did not like however, was that the film seemed rush. There definitely should have been more of a backstory for Mary. We did not get to see how she grew up, exactly what broke her and Tom (Billy Brown), or what really became of Danny’s mother. Furthermore, why didn’t Sony promote this film more? Taraji is a high profile actress you would think there would have been more advanced screenings and interviews with the cast. We definitely would not mind seeing a sequel (we aren’t sure how likely that will happen) where Danny, now a little older, has been trained by Mary and has to help her protect their new, peaceful life.

You all just be sure to catch Proud Mary in a theater near you, Happy viewing!

Marvel and DC Comics definitely hold a monopoly on the superhero film genre, but that does not mean a few of our favorite video game characters can’t join the fray. Apparently the popular video game company, Capcom, has announced one if its greatest heroes, Mega Man, is getting his own live action film!

mega man

Mega Man, as you may already know is a mostly blue robot created by philanthropic scientist, Dr. Wiley to help and benefit mankind peacefully. However, when Dr. Light’s former partner, Dr. Wiley, decides to use their robot creations in an attempt to take over the world, the robot that would become Mega Man is reformatted to become the heroic defender of humanity we know and love today.

There is no casting news on the film yet as it is in early development. We are very excited to see Mega Man to go the live action route. The special effects are going to be amazing; and getting to possibly see characters like Rush, Roll, Proto Man, Cutman, and Gutsman, is making us relive our childhoods. Mega Man’s success could even give way to a Capcom Cinematic Universe, meaning the return of franchises like Street Fighter to the big screen, and the debut of still others like Dark Stalkers! We will keep you posted as more Mega Man news as it becomes available!

Rosie Perez (@rosieperezbklyn) Cast as Renee Montoya in Suicide Squad Spin-Off Movie, “Birds Of Prey!”

The DC Cinematic Univers (DCU) has definitely had its setbacks with less than stellar reviews for many of its films including the Justice League, Batman vs. Superman, and even Suicide Squad. That is not stopping DC from moving forward with a Birds of Prey movie based off the DC Comics superhero team of mostly female operatives that have included the likes of Black Canary, Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), and Huntress. Now, it seems Rosie Perez has been cast in the film as Gotham City cop turned vigilante, Renee Montoya!

Those familiar with Batman comics know that Renee is not only a detective, but a lesbian and love interest for Kate  Kane/Batwoman . She later goes on to become the superhero/vigilante, The Question, as the original holder of the mantle, Vic Sage, dies of cancer. The Question wears a faceless mask and when Renee takes over the helm she gains a ray gun that vaporize just about anything. There is no word on if the film’s version of the character will take on heroism, but we are definitely hoping.

DC seems to be betting on its female heroes a lot more as Wonder Woman is their most, and only, successful film to date. Announcing a Birds of Prey movie after stating both Batgirl and Supergirl films may be in the works is highly progressive. Sometimes the best man for the job is a woman, it seems!

Birds of Prey core team line up; (l-r) Black Canary, Batgirl, Huntress

The cast of DC’s Birds Of Prey movie was already looking pretty good, with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead playing the Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell playing Black Canary, but now The Wrap is reporting that they’ll be joined by Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. In the comics, Montoya spent a few years as a regular Gotham City cop before becoming a vigilante herself as the second incarnation of The Question (who was basically a detective with a cool faceless mask), but we don’t know at this point if Perez’s Montoya has any superheroic aspirations.

What we do know is that the film will sort of be a Harley Quinn-centric Suicide Squad spin-off—but not the Harley Quinn-centric Suicide Squad spin-off—with Robbie’s Harley teaming up with some other female DC characters to stop a big villain. Also thanks to The Wrap, we now know that the big villain is going to be Black Mask, a Gotham-based mobster who wears a black skull mask in the comics. Birds Of Prey will be directed by Cathy Yan, with the script coming from new Batgirl writer Christina Hodson.

Rosie will make an awesome Renee Montoya and we cannot wait to learn more about this film. Charlie’s Angels eat your hearts out!

[TRAILER] “Fish Out Of Water!” Warner Bros. Releases New Extended “Aquaman” Trailer!

Warner Bros. remains “unbothered” in its attempts to expand the DC Cinematic Universe, and from the looks of it Aquaman will be taking it to the next level in the titular superhero’s first standalone feature film! When we last left Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) he, alongside Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Cyborg, managed to defeat Steppenwolf and stave an invasion from the latter’s homeworld of Apokolips. Well it looks like Aquman is back in action–this time not only to save the surface world–but his own home of Atlantis as he goes to battle with his half-brother, Ocean Master for the fate of the kingdom and the world at large!

The new trailer for Aquaman has been released and it looks amazing! Everything about this film screams action and thrills. From underwater battles and an amazing origin story to deadly sibling rivalry and super villains! Check out the full trailer above!

We have to say Aquaman may very well redeem the DC Cinematic Universe. Thus far, only Wonder Woman has been met with critical acclaim, but we just know the King of Atlantis has the potential to have a film just as great. We loved seeing Ocean Master, and more so Black Manta in the mix. We are about to see just how deadly two of the biggest villains in his rogues’ gallery are. Black Manta’s eye beams from his signature helmet, alone, are terrifying!

Based on the trailer we can also see that he is not alone in his battle for Atlantis, with Mera by his side. This film may very well show just how the two of them fell in love. The desert scene and the clip we see of them running from Black Manta and his henchmen, only prove they are quite the Dynamic Duo on their own.

Finally, seeing Aquaman in his iconic costume, as more than a king, and with Poseidon’s trident is EVERYTHING!

Besides the action and the story we are hoping in future trailers and the film we get to see Aquaman’s sidekicks and family including Vulko, Aqualad, Tempest, Dolphin, and Aquagirl. Saving the world was hard, but saving the ocean–which is infinitely bigger is even harder! Be sure you catch Aquaman in theaters everywhere December 21, 2018!
