[REVIEW] YOU WILL CRY! “Avengers: Endgame” (@Avengers)–THE EPIC CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFE!

Iron Man…Thor…Captain America…Black Widow…Hawkeye…Hulk…War Machine…Rocket Raccoon…Nebula. These are the Avengers who are giving you the cinematic experience of your life! It was nearly a year ago (in our universe) we watched as “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” The Avengers, and The Guardians of The Galaxy fail to save Earth, and the universe at large from Thanos’s mission to wipe out half of life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only did he succeed, but half of our heroes were literally swept away in the wind; as “with a snap” they were all turned to dust. Needless to say the remaining Avengers, and a powerful newcomer, prove to be tenacious as ever in their determination to avenge the fallen and take down The Mad Titan that took their loved ones and the world as we know it in Avengers: Endgame!

Avengers: Endgame is easily the most highly anticipated film of the last decade bringing to an end story lines and fantastic tales that have spanned over twenty-two films! This is far from a film, or even your regular superhero blockbuster, as the array of emotions you “true believers” will feel spans from grief and intrigue to righteous fury and an overwhelming sense of satisfaction. Earth’s home team, with a little extraterrestrial help, bring him the gold. For the rest of your days whether you hum it in your head, profess it from your mouth, or vibe it through your soul, “AVENGERS ASSEMBLE,” will be your new war cry! Hey Marvel Studios, what’s next?!

WARNING: Spoilers–PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

What We Liked

avengers endgame movie review

-The expanded line up of Avengers and remaining Guardians of The Galaxy joining forces to avenge the universe. Earth is still a big place, and even with the heavy losses both teams took they know they’re stronger together to protect what remains of life as they know it.

Captain Marvel’s timeliness and updated look. The girl knows how to make an entrance, and proves her mettle as perhaps the mightiest of the Avengers. Oh, and her comics’ accurate haircut isn’t bad either.

-The involvement of time travel to not only fix Thanos’s cosmic level genocide, but revisit some pretty awesome moments from previous Marvel Studios films that were near and dear to our heart. Somehow each of our characters get the closure, assurance, or peace they need to get the job done.

-Gamora’s heroism! No matter what time line she comes from, she proves she’s a hero. Her demise in the previous film is more than avenged in Endgame.

-The fury of the Scarlet Witch knows no bounds! She hurt Thanos like we have never seen, forcing him to fire on his own troops to save his life and temporarily stop the Avengers from winning.

-Seeing The Ancient One take down Hulk with a single blow, and finally doing what was best to save the universe. Yet again, no one could take a stone from a Sorcerer Supreme.

-Earth being the home of New Asgard and Thor joining the Guardians of The Galaxy!

What We Loved

hawkeye and black widow avengers endgame

-The girl power of this film! Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Valkyrie, Rescue (Pepper Potts), Okoye, Wasp, Nebula, Mantis, and Gamora are one helluva line of offense when it came to getting Spider-Man to his destination.

-The final, epic battle to defeat Thanos and forces. Never before, and maybe never again, have the Avengers Assembled in the thousands with the combined might of every Guardian of The Galaxy, Doctor Strange and the other wizards, Black Panther and The Wakandan Army, and the revived Avengers, save Vision and Black Widow! It was the battle of a lifetime and worth every moment of waiting.

-Iron Man finally learned to love in the form of his daughter with Pepper, Morgan Stark. The playboy finally took off all that emotional baggage and daddy issues he was using as armor to make the greater good happen. Tony Stark, you really are a hero.

-Captain America’s swan song–Captain America is truly worthy, ask Mjolnir (Thor’s hammer)! His one on one with Thanos was one for the ages. A man armed with a mystic war hammer and a nigh unbreakable shield versus a being with godlike strength is quite the spectacle to see! We hate he’s officially retiring, but we just know this new Captain America is going to do some amazing things.

-The familial bond between Black Widow and Hawkeye. Their “fight” with one another to sacrifice themselves for one another and to get the Soul Stone is endearing and tragic, then again what’s love without tragedy?

-Pepper Potts in he “Rescue” armor! She literally stood by her “Iron Man.”

What We Hated

iron man avengers endgame

-This was Stan Lee’s final cameo in any Marvel movies…RIP Stan, you’re a true hero and we miss you more than ever. Thanks for being a true superhero from all of us true believers.

-Black Widow and Iron Man’s demises. We knew there would be casualties in this war, but not these two heroes. Rest in peace? There’s got to be a way to bring them back.

-A “smart Hulk.” Hulk’s “Dr. Banner” persona is not what we need in a battle like this. An angry Hulk is a powerful and we were owed and epic battle between he and Thanos so he could reclaim his title of being “The strongest there is!”

-No post credit scenes! Really Marvel? We need some kind of sneak peek for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You seem to be unwittingly pitching “Young Avengers?” We’ll see!

Universal’s ‘Invisible Man’ is Monster Movie Magic!

If you’re a fan of monster movies, you may have given up hope after Universal’s failed monster mash franchise kick-starter The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise. This movie proved that big names and big budgets don’t guarantee stellar reviews. So when Kontrol Magazine received an invitation to see a special Atlanta screening on Wednesday, February 18 of Universal’s next monster flick, The Invisible Man, I was leery.

Grade: A+

From the moment the movie began, it was evident that writer-director Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man was going to be something different. One of the film’s actors, Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time), made that clear in her in-person introduction about the movie. Whannell, along with his partner in crime James Wan, helped redefine the horror genre with Saw and Insidious. The Saw films, in particular, pushed the boundaries of on-screen cinematic violence and helped introduce the term “torture porn” into the modern vernacular.

Whannell’s The Invisible Man is a thoroughly modern thriller that sidesteps the previous H.G. Wells adaptations do what Whannell does best: elevate the genre and scare people. The movie has been screened for critics, and they’re taking to social media in droves to report that The Invisible Man is the real deal — a tense, terrifying thriller grounded in real-world issues and featuring a performance for the ages from Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale).

Critics have every right to go absolutely bonkers over The Invisible Man. Moss stars as Cecilia Kass, whose boyfriend Adrian was both a wealthy tech genius and manipulative, abusive partner before apparently committing suicide. Cecilia eventually becomes convinced that he has returned to torment her as… well, an invisible man, although she understandably has a hard time getting anyone to believe her.

The Invisible Man Critic Reviews

  • Critic Witney Seibold was one of many to praise the film’s examination of the dynamics of abuse while also standing in awe of just how damn scary it is — and how much Moss sells Cecilia’s mounting terror. “[The Invisible Man] is not just one of the most tightly-wound thrillers in recent memory, but it is a pertinent and all-too-real look at the panic and damage left by an abusive relationship,” she tweeted. “Elisabeth Moss digs deep.”
  • We Live Entertainment editor-in-chief Scott Menzel concurred. “The Invisible Man is a tension filled thrill-ride from start to finish,” he tweeted. “Elizabeth Moss delivers a… captivating performance that is… some of her finest work to date.”
  • The Playlist’s Griffin Schiller called the film “a modern horror classic… Poignant & timely, packed full of edge of your seat anxiety inducing suspense! Sound & production design are MASSIVE standouts but Elizabeth Moss OWNS this film.”

The Invisible Man, which also stars the amazing new talent, Storm Reid, and the sexy Aldis Hodge, opens February 28, 2020. The response from critics and everyday moviegoers is setting an apparent theme: Monster movie magic is in the air. This film has all the ingredients to be one of the year’s biggest horror hits.

[REVIEW] A Campy, Girls Night Out in Gotham! “Birds of Prey & The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” Has the Makings of a Cult Classic!

Sometimes girls really do just want to have fun–while fighting for their lives! Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is back and SINGLE! After a literally explosive break up with The Joker, Harley is ready to be her own woman and be in charge of her own life–if she can keep it. Harley soon learns that not being The Joker’s girl leaves her vulnerable to anyone she’s wronged in the past and places her in the crosshair of Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), a deranged crime lord determined to use a mob family’s fortune to take over Gotham City. Meanwhile a few other Gotham ladies; detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), bar singer turned driver, Dinah Lance/Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) all have their own reasons to take down Black Mask. The task is anything but easy, but when one teen pickpocket, Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) unwittingly finds herself on Black Mask’s hit list it will take the unlikely team up of four very different women to save her life and stop Black Mask and his goons for good in “Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn!”

“Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” (Birds of Prey) has all the making of a cult classic–not a blockbuster! The film has all the feels we have seen in previous films and shows where an unlikely group of women band together by circumstances and forces beyond their control, but not the over the top strong start action we are use to now seeing in traditional superhero films. The film begins rather slow, narrated by Harley, telling the story midway from the beginning, allowing us to eventually catch up to present actions involving all the characters.

Margot Robbie is excellent as Harley giving us all the mayhem, anarchy, and craziness we love from the character. However, Renee and Black Canary seemed largely weakened and depowered. Both characters should have been depicted as much better fighters, especially Canary. In the comics her character is comparable to Batman in fighting skills and prowess AND she does not faint from using her sonic scream (The Canary Cry). Her backstory is also not so convoluted. Huntress is rather one dimensional, and none of her ties to the Batman Family are even hinted at. Lastly, the costumes need some work. Where are Black Canary’s fishnet stockings, and Huntress’ mask, cape, and hood are needed.

Birds of Prey core team line up; (l-r) Black Canary, Batgirl, Huntress

However, this film works largely because of Harley Quinn and Black Mask. They give us exactly what we need for over the top Batman villains. You get the gist of the kind of criminal element being dealt with in Gotham City, and why a vigilante like Batman is needed. If another “Birds of Prey” film is depicted more notable female villains and heroes native to Gotham City would be amazing. Can someone please get Lady Blackhawk, Power Girl, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, or even Batwoman on the line!

Just when you thought Captain Marvel was virtually unstoppable in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a rumor spawns that may through her a curve ball! Apparently, in an effort to introduce the mutant superhero team, X-Men, to the MCU, Rogue will appear in the next Captain Marvel movie.

Rogue vs. Captain Marvel

Rogue’s appearance in the next Captain Marvel film should not come as a surprise. Fans familiar with Marvel Comics know that Rogue began as a super villain, allied with her foster mothers, Mystique and Destiny, mutant terrorists and leaders of the team, The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Rogue’s original, and sole power set, was her signature ability to absorb superhuman powers, skills, and memories from others through physical contact. Her extra powers of flight and superhuman strength were abilities she “stole” by permanently absorbing Captain Marvel’s (then Ms. Marvel) powers permanently by holding on to her for too long. Captain Marvel was left comatose after her battle with Rogue for years and after struggled to become the hero she once was again.

We really hope Rogue does appear in the next Captain Marvel film! It is the perfect way to introduce her to the MCU! Also, she joins her fellow “X-Woman,” Psylocke by being an X-Men character rumored to be appearing in an upcoming Marvel Film. As we reported earlier, Psylocke may appear as “Lady Mandarin” in the upcoming “Shang-Chi” film.

What do you guys think? Are you hoping Captain Marvel and Rogue will come to blows in the next “Captain Marvel” film? Sound off in the comments’ section below!
