The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has expanded to include a new superhero, or super-heroine, we should say with the addition of Captain Marvel! Captain Marvel is unlike any hero the MCU has introduced us before, and is perhaps the hero needed to turn the tide after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The film, set in the nineties enters on air force pilot, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). Carol is stubborn, independent, headstrong– and amnesiac– finding herself caught in a war between two intergalactic empires, The blue-skinned humanoids, The Kree, and The Skrulls, a green-skinned race of shape-shifters. Carol, as “Captain Marvel,” must find a way to end the war, master her powers, and in the process piece together her long-lost past.

Captain Marvel is definitely worth watching! It is a superhuman punch for feminism and much needed diversity in the superhero genre. Sure, as Captain Marvel, Carol is very powerful, but her ingenuity, bravery, and determination are all innate traits she possesses–traits needed by all women to blaze their own “marvelous” path in this world. More so, we see different types of heroes in this film from refugees battling terrorism to a single mother risking her life to help her friend and save the world. We even see a future superhero–someone we will tell you about in a later post! You all just be sure to catch Captain Marvel in theaters everywhere this Friday nationwide!

Grade: A-

What We Liked

captain marvel movie poster

-The special effects of this film are truly “interstellar!” From the costumes  and space battles all the way up to how Captain Marvel displayed her powers are Grade A!

-Her buddy relationship with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). The two made quite the dynamic duo!

-The twist in The Skrulls’ story line and backstory. We will not spoil it for you, but we can say nothing is as it seems.

-The Supreme Intelligence’s appearance and abilities. The film did and excellent job of transcribing that entity from the comics to the film.

-The after credits scenes! There are two of them! Captain Marvel will definitely be in Avengers: Endgame!

-The twist on Mar-Vell–we aren’t spoiling that one!

What We Loved

maria rambeau and captain marvel

Lashana Lynch and Brie Larson as “Maria Rambeau” and “Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel”

-The girl power in this film! We saw not only a female superhero, but female scientists, rebels, warriors, air force pilots, and even a single mother risking it all to save the planet!

-Carol Danvers’ best friend, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), is a hero in her own right. She and Carol are truly sisters and she has her back so hard that she’s willing to help her fight in space. She’s also a single mother and a dark-skinned Black woman–come thru inclusivity!

-The appearance of Monica Rambeau! (Akira Akbar) Monica is destined to become a superhero as well, and for awhile will use the name, “Captain Marvel,” as well–at least that is what she is in the comics.

-The tribute to Stan Lee at the beginning. RIP to a real superhero.

-The movie pieces together the MCU timeline. If you’re planning to watch the films chronologically, then this film would fall second, nearly fifty years after the first Captain America film.

-The message every woman needs to hear–never give up. Carol refuses to give up no matter the odds or how many times she falls. She has nothing to prove other than she can do it all!

What We Hated

-The film begins slow, but we imagine piecing together the backstory of an amnesiac woman with super powers is no easy feat

It is sequel time! Just when we thought “To All The Boys I Loved” was neatly wrapped a done, Netflix blesses us with a sequel–“To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You!”

It’s a new year and Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo) are no longer pretending to be a couple. They ARE a couple. And, as Lara Jean navigates a trove of official firsts with Peter — her first real kiss, her first real date, her first Valentine’s Day — she finds herself leaning more on Kitty and Margot (Anna Cathcart and Janel Parrish), Chris (Madeleine Arthur), and an unexpected new confidant, Stormy (Holland Taylor), to help her manage the complex emotions that come with this new chapter of balancing a relationship and figuring out her authentic self.

But when John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher), another recipient of one of Lara Jean’s old love letters, enters her life again she must rely on herself more than ever as she’s confronted with her first real dilemma: Can a girl be in love with two boys at once?

We have to say we cannot wait for this film. The last film was so heartwarming and had all the angst and hi-jinks we love from a teen romantic comedy. It really looks like Lara Jean has her work cut out for her as she navigates these new challenges in her love life.

Meek Mill, Jahi Winston, Teyonah Parris & More Star in “CHARM CITY KINGS” Trailer!

Growing up in West Baltimore, teenage Mouse (JAHI DI’ALLO WINSTON, Queen & Slim, Proud Mary, The Upside) feels the fierce pull of different forces: Between notorious ex-con Blax (Grammy-nominated best-selling artist MEEK MILL) and concerned Detective Rivers (WILLIAM CATLETT, TV’s “Black Lightning”), and between the straight path set for Mouse by his concerned mother (TEYONAH PARRIS, If Beale Street Could Talk, Dear White People, TV’s “Empire”) and the dangers of gang life, which took his brother’s life.

The one truth Mouse knows is that he loves the power, artistry and energy of “The Ride” — the exhilarating motorized-dirt-bike scene that is both pastime and passion on the streets of Baltimore.

During one eventful summer, Mouse steers his way through two father figures, a first girlfriend, the pull of illegal choices and the thrill of stunt-riding that makes him and his friends feel like “CHARM CITY KINGS.”

Meek in “Charm City Kings”

We are really excited to see “Charm City Kings!” We personally know Jahi and he is one amazing young actor. Did you catch him in “Queen & Slim?” The film is reminiscent of “Biker Boyz” (2003), with the motorcycle motif. We have no doubt this film is going to amazing. Besides we want to see if Meek Mill has any real acting chops!

CHARM CITY KINGS will debut at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, followed by a release in NY/LA/Baltimore on April 10thand nationwide April 17th 2020.

We are a little less than four months away from the debut of Marvel’s standalone “Black Widow” movie. The film is definitely one of the most anticipated features of 2020. Thankfully, Marvel Studios has now dropped the second official trailer for the film!

As you may already know the film is a prequel, to the Avengers Infinity War and Endgame movies, set shortly after the events of “Captain America: Civil War.Black Widow returns to Russia and reunites with her “family,” Yelena Belenova (another Black Widow), Iron Maiden, and the Red Guardian. With their help she dares to take on The Red Room, the secret organization that creates female spies like herself and the mysterious assassin, Taskmaster!

Taskmaster (comic book version [left], movie version [right])

The first “Black Widow” trailer focused on Natasha’s [Romanoff] “family” as aforementioned, but this second one gives us a clear look at Taskmaster and hints at his skills. As you can see he an expert swordsman, fighter, gymnast, and has shield throwing skills similar to Captain America’s. In the comics, Taskmaster has “photographic reflexes, the ability to copy and mimic the fighting style of any person he sees granting him limited super speed, Olympic level conditioning, and allows him to predict movements from his opponents. Thus, at this point in the MCU, he possibly has mimicked the fighting styles of multiple Avengers, including Cap, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, and perhaps even Hawkeye. and Black Panther. Needless to Widow has her work cut out for her.

This new trailer only leaves us feening for the actual film. We really hate Black Widow has not gotten her own film earlier. She is seemingly dead as of “Avengers: Endgame,” and Scarlet Johansson’s contract with Marvel Studios is up. The trailer continues to play on the bond between Natasha and Yelena, forcing us to believe she will completely believe will assume the mantle of Black Widow.

What do you all think of the second official trailer for “Black Widow” and Taskmaster? Sound off in the comments’ section below!
