The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has expanded to include a new superhero, or super-heroine, we should say with the addition of Captain Marvel! Captain Marvel is unlike any hero the MCU has introduced us before, and is perhaps the hero needed to turn the tide after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The film, set in the nineties enters on air force pilot, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). Carol is stubborn, independent, headstrong– and amnesiac– finding herself caught in a war between two intergalactic empires, The blue-skinned humanoids, The Kree, and The Skrulls, a green-skinned race of shape-shifters. Carol, as “Captain Marvel,” must find a way to end the war, master her powers, and in the process piece together her long-lost past.

Captain Marvel is definitely worth watching! It is a superhuman punch for feminism and much needed diversity in the superhero genre. Sure, as Captain Marvel, Carol is very powerful, but her ingenuity, bravery, and determination are all innate traits she possesses–traits needed by all women to blaze their own “marvelous” path in this world. More so, we see different types of heroes in this film from refugees battling terrorism to a single mother risking her life to help her friend and save the world. We even see a future superhero–someone we will tell you about in a later post! You all just be sure to catch Captain Marvel in theaters everywhere this Friday nationwide!

Grade: A-

What We Liked

captain marvel movie poster

-The special effects of this film are truly “interstellar!” From the costumes  and space battles all the way up to how Captain Marvel displayed her powers are Grade A!

-Her buddy relationship with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). The two made quite the dynamic duo!

-The twist in The Skrulls’ story line and backstory. We will not spoil it for you, but we can say nothing is as it seems.

-The Supreme Intelligence’s appearance and abilities. The film did and excellent job of transcribing that entity from the comics to the film.

-The after credits scenes! There are two of them! Captain Marvel will definitely be in Avengers: Endgame!

-The twist on Mar-Vell–we aren’t spoiling that one!

What We Loved

maria rambeau and captain marvel

Lashana Lynch and Brie Larson as “Maria Rambeau” and “Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel”

-The girl power in this film! We saw not only a female superhero, but female scientists, rebels, warriors, air force pilots, and even a single mother risking it all to save the planet!

-Carol Danvers’ best friend, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), is a hero in her own right. She and Carol are truly sisters and she has her back so hard that she’s willing to help her fight in space. She’s also a single mother and a dark-skinned Black woman–come thru inclusivity!

-The appearance of Monica Rambeau! (Akira Akbar) Monica is destined to become a superhero as well, and for awhile will use the name, “Captain Marvel,” as well–at least that is what she is in the comics.

-The tribute to Stan Lee at the beginning. RIP to a real superhero.

-The movie pieces together the MCU timeline. If you’re planning to watch the films chronologically, then this film would fall second, nearly fifty years after the first Captain America film.

-The message every woman needs to hear–never give up. Carol refuses to give up no matter the odds or how many times she falls. She has nothing to prove other than she can do it all!

What We Hated

-The film begins slow, but we imagine piecing together the backstory of an amnesiac woman with super powers is no easy feat

6 underground

Ryan Reynolds is winning! Besides their inevitably being another “Deadpool” movie on the horizon when the Disney-Fox merger finally settles, he is starring into two other action films, “Free Guy,” and now, Netflix’s “6 Underground!”

Synopsis:
6 underground
What’s the best part of being dead?
It isn’t escaping your boss, your ex, or even erasing your criminal record.
The best part about being dead…is the freedom.
The freedom to fight the injustice and evil that lurk in our world without anyone or anything to slow you down or tell you “no.” 6 Underground introduces a new kind of action hero. Six individuals from all around the globe, each the very best at what they do, have been chosen not only for their skill, but for a unique desire to delete their pasts to change the future. The team is brought together by an enigmatic leader (Ryan Reynolds), whose sole mission in life is to ensure that, while he and his fellow operatives will never be remembered, their actions damn sure will.
This film sounds amazing and the trailer looks even more amazing. Hopefully this team of highly skilled soldiers and operatives will fare better than the last team a character Ryan Reynolds played and led (think X-Force from “Deadpool 2”) It gives us the same vibe as movies like “Renegades,” “A-Team,” or “The Expendables.” Netflix is really outdoing itself with its original films, and this looks as big budget as any action flick you might on The Big Screen.
Be sure to catch “6 Underground” this Friday on Netflix, Happy Viewing!

“Like A Boss” is definitely going to be one of the funniest and dynamic films of 2020. This cast is stellar, and the film comes off as “Girls Trip” meets “Bad Bosses!” Nevertheless, any film showing women in power and doing it big is a cause for celebration!

This standalone film will stand as a prequel of sorts falling in line between “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War;” detailing the origins of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) herself! Marvel has finally released the first trailer for the film and it looks promising!

In the trailer we see Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, recounting her life as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and an Avenger with cameos from Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) .

However, she now has to return to take Russia home of The Red Room, a secret organization that creates super spies/femme fatales just like Black Widow. It seems she is seeking the help of her “family” of Russian spies; a “sister”/fellow Black Widow, Yelena Belenova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff the Iron Maiden (Rachel Weisz), and Alexei Shostakovto the Red Guardian (David Harbour) to take them down.

The stakes seem to have been great, but we know she was ultimately success being that she (spoiler alert) only truly met her demise years later in “Avengers: Endgame” after sacrificing herself to claim the Soul Gem. We do, however, love seeing so many characters from her comic storylines. Red Guardian was actually her husband, but the Russian government tapped him to be their version of Captain America and dissolved their marriage. The Iron Maiden was trained similarly to Black Widow, but grew to hate living in her shadow and left Russia to become a freelance assassin and mercenary. Finally, Yelena was also code named Black Widow and has both a villian and ally to Romanoff.

Taskmaster

The villain of the film apparently is Taskmaster (rumored to be O-T Fagbenle), a villain with the ability to copy the movements and skills of anyone he has ever seen. This makes him especially deadly. In the comics he has taken on the Captain America’s shield throwing, Hawkeye’s archery, as well as the fighting style of a few Marvel Comics top hand to hand combatants.

We are hoping this film somehow will have a plot twist from “Avengers: Endgame” that allows us to resurrect Black Widow, similar to Gamora’s surprising return in the film. Black Widow has been such a staple of the Avengers films and the MCU as whole that we are not ready to let her go. Wasn’t losing Cap and Iron Man enough?
