The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has expanded to include a new superhero, or super-heroine, we should say with the addition of Captain Marvel! Captain Marvel is unlike any hero the MCU has introduced us before, and is perhaps the hero needed to turn the tide after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The film, set in the nineties enters on air force pilot, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). Carol is stubborn, independent, headstrong– and amnesiac– finding herself caught in a war between two intergalactic empires, The blue-skinned humanoids, The Kree, and The Skrulls, a green-skinned race of shape-shifters. Carol, as “Captain Marvel,” must find a way to end the war, master her powers, and in the process piece together her long-lost past.

Captain Marvel is definitely worth watching! It is a superhuman punch for feminism and much needed diversity in the superhero genre. Sure, as Captain Marvel, Carol is very powerful, but her ingenuity, bravery, and determination are all innate traits she possesses–traits needed by all women to blaze their own “marvelous” path in this world. More so, we see different types of heroes in this film from refugees battling terrorism to a single mother risking her life to help her friend and save the world. We even see a future superhero–someone we will tell you about in a later post! You all just be sure to catch Captain Marvel in theaters everywhere this Friday nationwide!

What We Liked

captain marvel movie poster

-The special effects of this film are truly “interstellar!” From the costumes  and space battles all the way up to how Captain Marvel displayed her powers are Grade A!

-Her buddy relationship with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). The two made quite the dynamic duo!

-The twist in The Skrulls’ story line and backstory. We will not spoil it for you, but we can say nothing is as it seems.

-The Supreme Intelligence’s appearance and abilities. The film did and excellent job of transcribing that entity from the comics to the film.

-The after credits scenes! There are two of them! Captain Marvel will definitely be in Avengers: Endgame!

-The twist on Mar-Vell–we aren’t spoiling that one!

What We Loved

maria rambeau and captain marvel

Lashana Lynch and Brie Larson as “Maria Rambeau” and “Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel”

-The girl power in this film! We saw not only a female superhero, but female scientists, rebels, warriors, air force pilots, and even a single mother risking it all to save the planet!

-Carol Danvers’ best friend, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), is a hero in her own right. She and Carol are truly sisters and she has her back so hard that she’s willing to help her fight in space. She’s also a single mother and a dark-skinned Black woman–come thru inclusivity!

-The appearance of Monica Rambeau! (Akira Akbar) Monica is destined to become a superhero as well, and for awhile will use the name, “Captain Marvel,” as well–at least that is what she is in the comics.

-The tribute to Stan Lee at the beginning. RIP to a real superhero.

-The movie pieces together the MCU timeline. If you’re planning to watch the films chronologically, then this film would fall second, nearly fifty years after the first Captain America film.

-The message every woman needs to hear–never give up. Carol refuses to give up no matter the odds or how many times she falls. She has nothing to prove other than she can do it all!

What We Hated

-The film begins slow, but we imagine piecing together the backstory of an amnesiac woman with super powers is no easy feat

Warner Bros. is postponing Diana Prince’s return to the big screen. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, “Wonder Woman 1984” will now hit theaters on Aug. 14 instead of June 5.

“When we greenlit ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14,” Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, said in a statement. “We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then.”

The delays were inevitable as multiplexes across the country remain closed to help halt the spread of the novel virus. Warner Bros. was always committed to debuting its “Wonder Woman” sequel in cinemas, and the studio felt it was realistic for theaters to be up and running again by August.

Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the film we want to see the most this year. Especially since it is set in our birth year. We hate we have to wait a little longer to see Wonder Woman back on The Big Screen, but as they say “better safe than sorry.” We are praying the world will have returned to some type of normalcy by August.

Marvel’s Black Widow. Originally set to be with us on May 1st, the studio has now delayed the movie indefinitely, pulling it off the schedule and not giving us a new date for when we can expect it to open. Of course, it still will hit theaters at some point, but right now, we don’t know when that’ll be or how long we’ll need to wait to get a new release date.

Indeed, with the Coronavirus quickly spreading and showing no signs of slowing down, it seems like every major movie scheduled from now until at least July/August will be getting delayed, leaving the entertainment landscape pretty empty for the foreseeable future. Unless, of course, some of these titles end up on streaming platforms instead.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but for now, Marvel fans will have to wait a little longer for Phase 4 to kickoff with Black Widow, as it’ll no longer be here in May.

This really sucks. We were looking forward to the Black Widow movie. We are hoping and praying that coronavirus will will cured or at least contained soon. We guess we can count moviegoing as a way to get past the next few weeks of quarantine. Be safe everyone.

Essence Atkins & Keith Robinson Tackle “Open Marriages” in BET’s “Open” Movie!

Marriage, in any form, is a great deal of work. Traditionally it has been viewed as a committed and MONOGAMOUS relationship between a man and a woman. However in 2020, it seems to be whatever works for a particular couple, and nothing is defiled as long as both people in the relationship agree on their terms of engagement. BET’s latest movie, “Open” starring Essence Atkins (Smart Guy, Half & Half, Ambitions) and Keith Robinson (Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue, Dreamgirls, Saints & Sinners) tackles and explores the issue of “open marriages.”

An open marriage (as defined by Dictionary.com) is “a marriage or relationship in which both partners agree that each may have sexual relations with others.” Set in Atlanta, in “Open,” we meet a seemingly happily married couple, Wren (Essence Atkins) and Cameron (Keith Robinson), who also seem to have it all. However, the two are currently in an open marriage at Wren’s behest. As the child of divorced parents whose relationship was riddled with infidelity, Wren feels an open marriage will keep she and Cameron together ultimately. The couple abide by three rules: One, never sleep with an ex or anyone they have ever had an intimate relationship before, Two, never have sex with the same person more than once, and Three, always tell the other person when you are about to engage with someone else.

Surprisingly, there open marriage seems to work until Wren’s first love, Mars (Matt Cedeno), returns and they begin a torrid affair. The affair not only breaks the rules but, exposes their open marriage status, and leaves Cameron questioning the fidelity of their marriage. Wren must not only learn from her mistakes, but accept hard truths about who she is and what she really wants if she is to salvage her relationship.

This film is amazing! The subject material is fascinating! Open marriages are rarely discussed in such a productive and thorough way on any form of media. Most people assume it is way a for married individuals to have sex with other people without it being considered cheating. However, it seems that Wren and Cameron at the time, were doing what they felt was best for their marriage. We are, however, surprised it was Wren that initiated the entire notion. The growth of both characters is admirable as one find her true self, and the other realizes what is most important to him.

cast of open film bet

We were invited to a screening attended by the cast of the film, the director, Cas Sigers-Beedle, and the executive producer, famed actress, Terri J. Vaughn. There Essence spoke on how she feels about open marriages and why she chose to do the movie. “…I could never do one [she laughs]. I think people do what is best for them and their relationship…We spoke to a few couples who engage in them and they pretty much explain they set rules, talk about everything, and work through their issues…I loved the script! I couldn’t put it down once I picked it up. Wren was just an incredible character…” She went on to share how much she enjoyed working with Keith Robinson again. “We met back in 2002 on ‘Half & Half,’  he had a recurring role as ‘Neil [Crawford]’… and have remained friends to this day. He’s such a gentleman and great guy…now here we are Dee Dee and Neil married and open [she laughs].”

“Open” is definitely a film worth watching, encouraging at the very least pertinent dialogue concerning relationship, sex, and infidelity. You can catch the film now on BET and BET Her. Check your local listings for showtimes.
