HeyMikeyATL was invited to attend the pre-screening for The Predator last night held at the Regal Cinema in Atlantic Station. For someone who has never seen the 1987 original, I had no idea what I was in for but let me say I was pleasantly surprised.

The American science fiction action filmed is the fourth installment in the Predator film series and it stars elite sniper Boyd Holbrook as Quinn McKenna, This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown, comedian Keegan-Michael Key, Moonlight’s very own, Trevante Rhodes and many more.

The movie is jam packed with action within the first few minutes but is continuously followed up with snarky remarks from supporting casts and hilarious one liners sprinkled throughout. By happenstance, this group of ex-military turned loony misfits team up together to conquer the Predator but the journey to victory comes with various twists and turns between space alien dogs, predators gone rogue, obsessive scientist, and a sweet autistic boy Rory McKenna, who is Captain Quinn’s son and the real star of the film. This isn’t just another action movie. It has layers of parodies, drama, science, and at the core of it all: a sense of family.

If you’re looking to be entertained from start to finish this weekend, the Predator is the best move. Even if you haven’t seen any of the installments before, by the end of the film, you’ll feel all caught up.

We’ll Never “Let It Go!” “Frozen 2” (@DisneyFrozen) Takes Us To Arendelle & BEYOND!

Grade: A-

Like many other curious movie-goers, I saw Frozen in theaters only after being relentlessly pelted with hype. I found, despite its rather half-baked storyline, it was thoroughly enjoyable. Idina Menzel’s soaring Broadway vocals were as genuinely as thrilling as Kristen Bell’s delicate melodies. The finale of true love saving the day being the familial bond between sisters subverted the dozens of Disney animated antecedents and was legitimately refreshing.

However, even after my many, many sessions of trying my best to “Let It Go” as the soundtrack played in my car, I still could not get over the plot holes. Why did Elsa have magic? Why didn’t Anna? Why did their parents leave? Why did they go to the trolls only to completely ignore their advice and purposefully traumatize their own children?

Like any respectable sequel, “Frozen 2,” not only attempts answers some of these questions, but also expands on the world of Arendelle. We’re treated to more magical lore and a deepening of Arendelle history, and storylines with character development for our three favorite humans and singular magical snowman. We are witness as each of our main cast begins to experience growing pains.

Elsa (Idina Menzel) is a ball of nerves, always trying to what is best for the kingdom, but ignoring what is best for her. She hears a call of magic and does everything she can to deny the pull. Anna (Kristen Bell) is so constantly worried for her sister and her powers she’s afraid to have her own life away from Elsa. Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) is coming to the realization that his feelings for Anna are something more and he struggles to find the right way and time to propose marriage. Olaf (Jonathan Groff), the closest to any child character, begins to wonder about the permanence of things and if any of what he’s experiencing will make sense when he’s older.

While many of the questions from “Frozen” are answered, “Frozen 2″ presents us with a new avalanche of questions and themes. What do you do when you find out your ancestors committed horrific acts of betrayal? How do you handle new, negative emotions in the confusion of growing up? How do you push through the grief after a devastating loss? How do you deal with the vulnerabilities of being in love and how can you be a good partner and model healthy behavior when your loved one needs help with a situation that doesn’t center you? These themes and questions are undoubtedly more mature than than those presented in “Frozen,” but in the six years since its release the audience has matured as well. And as I’m sure all parents are very aware of, there will be repeat viewings, during which these themes and answers will hopefully stick.

Much like the themes and characters, the music of “Frozen 2″ is more complex than that of its predecessor. These songs do far more with melody, lyric, humor, and heart. Elsa’s duet with the forest spirits on “Into the Unknown,” is nothing short of magical. Kristoff’s “Lost in the Woods,” a send up of 80’s rock ballads, complete with hair tossing and guitar riffs had the audience in stitches and “The Next Right Thing” will definitely make it on to more than a few adults’ playlists. As a whole and as separate pieces they’re all much stronger and more satisfying, but there isn’t one clear, immediate stand out that could dethrone “Let It Go.”

We may need a “Frozen 3” just to give our favorite set of sisters a proper send off! Catch “Frozen 2” in theaters everywhere this Friday, November 22nd!

YES! Killmonger & M’Baku Set to Return in “Black Panther 2!”

“Black Panther” is still one of the top-grossing films of all time, and remains the highest grossing one for a predominantly Black cast. Indeed, the cast of the film was nothing short of amazing with A-list actors like Chadwick Bozeman, Angela Bassett, Forrest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o and Michael B. Jordan.

It was leaked last year by Angela’s husband, Courtney B. Vance, that the entire cast would be returning, but now it is being reported that Michael B. Jordan and Winston Duke’s characters, “Killmonger,” and “M’Baku” (Man-Ape) will return as well in “Black Panther 2!

Yes “Black Panther” was chalked full of amazing characters, especially the women, but it was the aforementioned characters Killmonger and M’Baku who stole the show. Killmonger was a rare of example of the “honorable villain.” (This type of villain is one you empathize with and is fighting for a righteous cause, even if they are going about it the wrong way. Other notable examples would be “X-Men’s” Magneto, “Gargoyles'” Xanatos, and Catman from DC Comics.) Killmonger was a very complex character with a number of issues to impact. His character represented the African-American experience in the context of being African in a global context. Also, it was never confirmed that Killmonger died from the wound he received from T’Challa (Chadwick Bozeman). Even then, the vibranium, technology, and mixture of science and magic in Wakanda could revive or stabilize him.

We are not surprised at M’Baku’s return. He was seen helping the Wakandan Army, Avengers, and their allies take down Thanos’ forces in Avengers: Endgame. The question, however, is in what capacity will he return? As the villain? In the comics, he is Man-Ape a rival and staunch enemy of Black Panther and the Panther Clan. Then there is the fbaive year gap where T’Challa and his sister, Shuri were both wiped from existence. Who ruled Wakanda in his absence? M’Baku would seem to be a natural choice as a member of the Wakandan council at the end of the first film and being the ruler of the Jabari tribe he knows how to govern.

Still, Michael B. Jordan and Winston Duke are both sex symbols and we are always happy to see them on screen. Even if they are only doing cameos we are requesting the former’s chest and the latter’s thighs to be in attendance! What do you guys think of this new “Black Panther 2” news? It’s no exaggeration to say that Joker is a monster of a hit in terms of box office sales. Having recently topped the UK charts for six consecutive weeks, the accomplishments just keep adding up. In fact, according to Forbes, the film will pass – or, in all likelihood, has passed – the $1 billion worldwide mark today.

Currently, it’s got a domestic total of just over $316 million and – at the time of writing – a worldwide figure of a whopping $998 million. This means that in the next few hours it’ll smash through the one billion dollar barrier, if it hasn’t already, making it the first R-rated movie to reach such a milestone.

It’s also “the third non-Disney/Universal movie to do so in just under a year,” the other two being Aquaman and Spider-Man: Far From Home. We should also mention that those two films made it to $1 billion with the help of China’s box office figures, whereas Joker has managed without it. To that extent, all it needs to do now is pass The Dark Knight and it’ll be the biggest movie to never play in China (there’s an interesting fact for you).

Despite director Todd Phillips saying that Joker was only intended as a one-off, this latest achievement will surely get things rolling for a possible sequel. After all, given the ending of the first film, it would definitely make sense to pursue further ideas, especially when you factor in its business at the box office.

We are really glad “Joker” is so successful. The film was definitely one of the better comic book-based films we have seen. Joaquin’s version of The Joker is nothing short of genius. We would actually love it if his version of the villain would ingratiated into the DCEU.
