Masterful filmmaker Dee Rees vividly captures the 1940s American South in the film Mudbound, based on the international bestselling novel by Hillary Jordan.

The film, an adaptation co-written by Virgil Williams and Rees, is the timeless and timely story of two families – one black, one white – bound together by the farmland of the Mississippi Delta during the Jim Crow era.

John Boyega as “John Pentecost” in “Pacific Rim: Uprising”

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.”  Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld.  But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war.  As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left.  Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s Daredevil, STARZ’s Spartacus) and also stars Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.

We cannot wait to see this film! The Kaijus from the last film were gargantuan and we just know they are really going to up the ante in this film! John Boyega is an amazing actor–and pretty hot too–he is going to kill on the screen. He is definitely shaping up to be a top action star in Hollywood!

Taraji P. Henson (@TherealTaraji) Goes Full On Pam Grier in “Proud Mary!”(@ProudMaryMovie)

We thought the age of Blaxploitation films was over, but thankfully there is some nostalgia in the air still. Sony seems intent on capitalizing on that in its latest film, starring Taraji P. Henson, in Proud Mary!

We thought the age of Blaxploitation films was over, but thankfully there is some nostalgia in the air still. Sony seems intent on capitalizing on that in its latest film, starring Taraji P. Henson, in Proud Mary!

The film centers on Mary (Taraji P. Henson), a guilt-ridden hitwoman/mob enforcer who takes in an orphan, Danny (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) after killing his father. Mary is determined to make amends for what has transpired in Danny’s life after and goes after a drug lord from a rival mob family for it. The consequences are immense as she must soon find a way to cover her tracks, protect Danny, and finally leave the mob for good–something that is far easier said than done!

We have to say this film was just “okay.” What we really liked, of course, was the action. It was good seeing Taraji branch out into an action role. She definitely did that! The fight and shooting scenes were superb. Jahi Winston really sells the role of the troubled street kid that you cannot help but love. He and Taraji have great chemistry in a “faux mother-son” kind of way. Surprisingly, we saw Danny Glover and Margaret Avery reunite! As you know they were “Mister/Albert” and “Shug Avery” from The Color Purple.

What we did not like however, was that the film seemed rush. There definitely should have been more of a backstory for Mary. We did not get to see how she grew up, exactly what broke her and Tom (Billy Brown), or what really became of Danny’s mother. Furthermore, why didn’t Sony promote this film more? Taraji is a high profile actress you would think there would have been more advanced screenings and interviews with the cast. We definitely would not mind seeing a sequel (we aren’t sure how likely that will happen) where Danny, now a little older, has been trained by Mary and has to help her protect their new, peaceful life.

You all just be sure to catch Proud Mary in a theater near you, Happy viewing!

[TRAILER] NETFLIX’s (@netflix) ‘STEP SISTERS’ Stomps It Like It’s Hot on 1/19!

The first trailer for the upcoming Netflix dance comedy Step Sisters is out now!
via Press Release

The movie, which comes to the streaming service on January 19, is directed by Charles Stone III (Drumline) and written by Chuck Hayward (Dear White People) as well as Emmy Award® winner Lena Waithe (Master of None), Ben Cory Jones (Insecure) and stars Megalyn Echikunwoke, Naturi Naughton, Marque Richardson, and Matt McGorry.

Jamilah Bishop (Megalyn Echikunwoke) seems to excel at everything: She’s president of her sorority, captain of the step dance crew, liaison to the college dean and a star student who is on her way to Harvard Law School.

But when Jamilah is asked to teach a misbehaving, mostly white sorority how to step, success seems impossible. Without telling her own sorority sisters, Jamilah begins training rivals Sigma Beta Beta (SBB) for the “Steptacular” competitive dance competition.

Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman also serve as producers, and Patrick Murray and Josh Reinhold are executive producers on the film.

Netflix is really coming hard with its programming for 2018 out the gate! We have to say we will definitely be tuning into Step Sisters we are always down for a good step movie. It kind of reminds us of that movie, How She Move (2017), starring Queen Sugar’s Rutina Wesley. This film is definitely a far cry from anything Megalyn Echikunwoke has done before. We were hoping to see her in an Arrowverse spin-off (CW are you listening) You all just be sure to tune in on January 19th!
