Superheroes–we mean actors that play superheroes–are uniting! Will Smith and Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Tom Holland are teaming up for a new movie, an animated spy movie!

Spies in Disguise is the current project that both Will Smith and Tom Holland have been signed onto. Will Smith, of course, is best known for his roles in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Men in Black, and Suicide Squad. While a newer member of Hollywood’s elite, Tom Holland isn’t someone to be ignored. You might recognize him best from Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Lost City of Z. Now, the two are coming together to work on a brand new animated feature film.

Based on the short film, Pigeon: Impossible, the new animated feature length film will have similar ties to its source material. For those not in the know, Pigeon: Impossible is about a pigeon who somehow gets stuck in a nuclear briefcase, and things just get worse from there. The new feature film should bring a lot more to the table when it comes to both details and storytelling.

An exclusive from Variety has revealed that both Will Smith and Tom Holland will lend their voices over to the film. It will be produced by 20th Century Fox’s Animation department, with the movie currently scheduled to hit theaters in January 2019. The Peanuts Movie helmsman Nick Bruno will call the shots. Spies in Disguise is part of Fox’s ongoing initiative to increase their animation output under new CEO Stacey Snider.

Screen Rant attended a Fox slate event in London where more details were offered. In the Spies in Disguise, Smith will play Lance Sterling, a cocky super spy who is turned into a pigeon by Holland’s inventor Walter Beckett (who has a whole host of cool gadgets). The pair team up with a gang of real pigeons and group of techies to try and stop a Bondian villain in an adventure described as “21 Jump Street meets Skyfall” by the filmmakers.

We were also shown footage from the movie, illustrating the two lead characters. A clip starring Smith depicted his character on a sting operation where he sets up gadget cameras to record his various antics. While fighting villains (that all know his name), Smith’s sleuth uses lobsters and alcohol as weapons. The one focusing on Holland using parkour to escape the clutches of Yakuza enemies, while using a gadget to calculate his jumps. He fails and is flung from a building, becoming trapped outside an elevator by grappling hook. Holland’s character then falls through a restaurant and lands in a palm tree. Smith remarks that Holland can take a beating, to which the youngster quips he learned how to in middle school.

While Spies in Disguise might end up being great (and the filmmakers said to Screen Rant they hope it to be a jumping off point for a franchise), Fox is often behind the likes of Disney/Pixar and other top tier competitors. The quality of Spies in Disguise might derail as the idea of doing more animated films might outweigh the opportunity to create something truly great with these two standout actors. All that being said, the movie still has a long way to go until they’ll be able to experience it. It’s probably best to hold back on negative opinions before the movie actually starts coming together. As of right now, Spies in Disguise is still in the very early development stages, so even more news should be coming soon.

This is going to be good!

Sad Day! Marvel Studios Loses Rights to Spider-Man, After Deal Dissolves…

Fans everywhere rejoiced as Disney bought out Twentieth Century Fox subsequently gaining movie rights for the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, and a few other Marvel and superhero properties. Just a few years beforehand the Mickey Mouse company reached a deal with Sony to add Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with rave reviews, even making him an Avenger. Those days are seemingly behind us as Sony has decided to no longer allow Marvel Studios to use the Webslinger in anymore of its films as the two companies have failed to come to a licensing agreement.

Apparently Disney was only making five percent of the take from Spider-Man films released under Marvel Studios, and were now seeking to make it a 50/50 split in revenue. Sony has trashed the deal.

Kevin Feige, the president of Disney-owned Marvel Studios, will no longer produce the “Spider-Man” movies released by rival studio Sony Pictures after the two companies failed to come to a new agreement, according to three people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to comment.

Disney, which had a major hand in producing megahits “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and its recent sequel “Far From Home,” wanted to take a 50% co-financing stake in future “Spider-Man” films, these people said. But Sony, which is riding high on the success of the Spider-Man movies, was unwilling to give up such a large portion of its most valuable franchise.

Another major factor in negotiations was the growing demands on Feige’s time, said people with knowledge of the situation.

Disney wants the highly successful producer to focus on the Marvel characters it owns, which recently expanded to include the “X-Men” characters. Disney acquired the “X-Men” rights as part of its purchase of 20th Century Fox. Feige also has been tasked with shepherding a significant lineup of original Marvel Studios shows for the company’s all-important streaming service Disney+, which is expected to launch Nov. 12 in a high-stakes gamble to take on Netflix.

Also on Feige’s plate: building the next phase of Marvel movies, including the long-anticipated “Black Widow” feature and a fourth “Thor” film. It’s unclear how, exactly, Spider-Man would have fit into the next round of Marvel Studios movies if the studios had been able to reach a deal.

This is really upsetting to fans everywhere. We wish Sony could have budged a little on this agreement, especially since its previous Spider-Man films have been so lackluster in comparison to the recent ones under Marvel’s prodction. Get back to the drawing board Marvel and Sony we need Spider-Man in the MCU!

Marvel Phase 4  has been announced at San Diego Comic Con and we are ecstatic! The next phase of the latest set of Marvel films introduces us to five new series on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+, a new Blade, as Mahershalah Ali has been cast in the role of the half-vampire superhero, sequels to Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Doctor Stranger, Guardians of The Galaxy, and Thor, movies based on The Eternals, Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and the Fantastic Four, and mutants finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

The blerd in us is screaming at the above mentioned news as even more superheroes are coming to the screen. The Disney+ shows will feature shows based on Hawkeye, Captain America & Falcon, Loki, The Scarlet Witch & Vision (WandaVision), and What If? The latter will be animated and is based off the line of Marvel Comics of the same name showing what would happen if certain heroes or villains made other decisions in events, instead of what we originally saw play out.

The news of Mahershalah’s casting as Blade is genius. He has the look, build, and acting chops to be the vampire bad ass we grew to know and love in the late nineties and early 2000s. His inclusion with Doctor Strange shows Marvel is definitely including the supernatural and more magic in their roster. This is not Mahershalah’s first bout in the MCU, however, as he portrayed the crime lord, Cottonmouth in Netflix’s Luke Cage during its first season. In other casting news for Marvel, Natalie Portman has been cast as the female Thor! As you may recall, a couple of years ago in the comics Thor became unworthy to wield Mjolnir and Jane Foster (Natalie’s character, and Thor’s original love interest) was worthy and became the new Thor! This should all play out in Thor: Love & Thunder! Perhaps there will be a love triangle between he, Valkyrie, and Jane–if the former is not cast completely as a lesbian, but bisexual instead.

We are not surprised to hear that Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Doctor Stranger, Guardians of The Galaxy, and Thor are getting sequels. Each of these characters are now headliners in the MCU, especially with the retirement of Captain America (Steve Rogers) and the demise of Iron Man and Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame. Black Widow’s standalone film will be a prequel and The Eternals is a new film altogether that may explain Thanos’ origins and introduce us to characters like Mentor (Thanos’ father), Eros (Thanos’ brother), and Sersi. The latter two are know Avengers in the comics.

x-men and fantastic four

Perhaps the most anticipated news of the new phase is the mention of the Fantastic Four being introduced, along with the introduction of mutants. Retconning the Fantastic Four’s origins and adding them to the MCU should be easy. The mutants, however, are a different thing. Even if mutants are just now being discovered, how do we explain older mutants like Wolverine, Magneto, and Professor X sitting out the cataclysms the Avengers have protected the world from? All in all, we are so excited about the future of the MCU! What do you guys think? Sound off in the comments section below.

Check out a few of the tweets below:

As much hate as these racist comments and trolls gave, these was even more love from Black Twitter and many media outlets praising Disney for their diversity casting. Halle will star alongside Melissa McCarthy who has been tapped to play the sea witch, Ursula; and Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina to play Flounder and Scuttle, respectively. What do you guys think of Disney’s casting decision for The Little Mermaid. Are you down for our next trip “Under The Sea?”
