It would be hard for me to try and describe my personal style without mentioning Jimi Hendrix.

Jimi Hendrix fashion crush

The megastar, who ruled the late 1960’s, marched to the beat of his own drum and would become one of the most recognizable public figures the world over.  Hailing from Seattle, the future rock star seemingly always had the musical bug dancing around in his head. After years of using a broom as a pretend guitar, Hendrix purchased his first one at the age of 15 for a hefty $5.  Soon after he formed his first band called the Velvetones, it became apparent that no one be able to hear him over large crowds.  After constant urging, Hendrix’ father purchased his first electric guitar, thus creating a legend in the making.

By the late 1960’s, Jimi Hendrix had become world famous thanks in large parts to his onstage antics, such as burning his guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival.  The image of him kneeling at his burning guitar would become one of the most famous and referenced images across the globe. During this time, Hendrix’ style became just as famous as the musician himself.  So much so that it seemed to be a major influence on pop culture. Most people’s typical idea of male fashion in the 1960’s would probably resemble a look or two from Hendrix. His 1969 look from his performance at Woodstock now hangs in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Nowadays you can spot Jimi Hendrix’ influence everywhere.  Stars like Swae Lee of Rae Sremmurd and Wiz Khalifa all seem to have taken a liking to the “Hendrix” way of looking and dressing. It is also true that many of the kids today have adopted his style and don’t even realize it. I’m just grateful to be at an age where I can not only rock his style, but also be able to appreciate where it came from.

The New York designers brought their A-game for the spring 2019 fashion week season.
The best thing about New York fashion week is it’s eclectic group of designers that offer up variety for the fashion elite. The more over the top designers like Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs didn’t disappoint with their use of color and decadence. Others like Victoria Beckham and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s The Row were more on the minimal side favoring impeccable tailoring and luxe fabric

Wild Thoughts–Fall 2018’s Printed Accessories!

As Fall approaches ever so quickly, it’s normal to begin taking a census of your fall wardrobe.

One thing that shouldn’t be left out are the accessories. Something so seemingly minor is the one thing that deserves a scrutinizing eye. For fall, many designers accessorized their looks with wild prints and colors. I’ve comprised a few options that will lighten up your fall wardrobe indefinitely. This will surely stop traffic on even the most dreary of days.

That being said, don’t be afraid to have a bold attitude with all of your wardrobe. A printed dress hat or even wildly colored jewelry can take your look from drab to fierce.

How to Grieve Stylishly

Funeral fashion

Like many others I woke up Wednesday morning to the incredibly sad news of the passing of music icon Aretha Franklin.

It’s funny how you get so used to a certain presence that you never imagine what it would be like if they were no longer here.  As I began to reflect on all of my memories of Miss Franklin, another memory crept into my mind. Back in 2010, the world was saddened by the sudden suicide of legendary designer Alexander McQueen.  This sad occasion was memorialized at one of the most stylish and over the top funerals that I had ever seen. One by one, fashion icons like Naomi Campbell, Sarah Jessica Parker and Daphne Guiness strutted past photographers and thousands of grieving fans decked out in the latest McQueen designs.  It made such an impact on my psyche that I couldn’t help but fantasize about how i would style for a funeral. With the collections for fall 2018, there was no shortage of options.

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t be too sexy or flashy for a funeral.  Meaning anything that shows too much skin or over embellished with colorful sequins is completely out.

Now I’m not saying you can’t have a few accents. A subtle embroidery or print that isn’t too distracting is fine. After all, a true fashion lover isn’t going to change their whole style simply because of a sad occasion.

Any accessories should be minimal, however, they can still have some pizzazz. Nothing too over powering but with just enough detail to set yourself apart from the rest.

Something as sad as a funeral is stressful in itself, but maybe a stylish outlook will be a stepping stone to putting the pieces back together.

RIP Aretha Franklin
