Ice Cube is about to seriously f**k over his investors’ bank accounts–NO VASELINE! Apparently Ice Cube and his partner, Jeff Kwatinez, founders of Big3 Basketball League are headed to court after a group of Qatari nationals misled them into believing they had a connection to the Qatari Royal Family and only paid a little more than half the money agreed to invest in the league!

In the suit,  they accuse the investor group of defamation, libel, and interference with contractual relationships. The complaint alleges that one of the investors spread a false and harmful rumor about Kwatinetz, referring to the league’s African-American players as “Rich Nigg*s,” racist language he said he “never had and never would” use. It also claims the investors told players and outsiders that the league was poorly managed. They argue in the lawsuit,

When Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz pursued their lifelong dream of starting a basketball league from the ground up, and invested their personal assets and time in doing so, the last thing on their list of plausible concerns and impediments would be the malicious and reckless conduct of foreign actors and compromised agents and actors working on their behalf.

The investors included Ahmed Al-Rumaihi, a former Qatari diplomat and head of Qatar Investments; Faisal Al-Hamadi, managing partner of Ory Capital; and Ayman Sabi, a Libyan-born American citizen who claims to be a board member of the Qatar Investment Authority. Together, they formed Sport Trinity, an investment vehicle whose benefactor, the suit alleges, is Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Sau Al Thani, chief executive of the Qatari Investment Authority. The suit says,

Touting their love of basketball and their familial connections and relationships with the royal Al-Thani Family in the State of Qatar, and thus access to vast resources and capital, defendants were brought to Big3 as passive investors and introduced by the league’s former president and commissioner.

In the lawsuit, Kwatinetz and Cube say they expected the investors to be passive, but instead they were too involved in the league. They give examples of their over involvement which they claim included: showering select Big3 employees with lavish gifts, hosting parties on yachts and in their Los Angeles mansions, extending use of their expensive cars, and bragging about their association with the league’s celebrity investors and NBA stars. The suit claims,

These members and associates of the royal family made excuse after excuse for not paying, all of which is documented in text messages and emails, where the blame for their failure to fund the millions they owed to Big3 ran the gamut from their ‘sinuses,’ ‘hiking,’ it being a ‘long day bro,’ and to bad press regarding Qatar associations with alleged funding of terrorism.

In the suit, Kwatinetz says that he was confronted after a memorial service in February for Big3 player Rasual ButlerHe says that he asked Al-Rumaihi  if the balance, believed to be $4 million, would be wired the following Monday. In response, he says that Al-Rumaihi proposed a surprising counteroffer: a 25% stake in the league, for Ayman to be named chief operating officer and to be afforded “respect as a royal family member”. An argument ignited between the two and Kwatinetz says that Al-Rumaihi threatened. The suit alleges,

“Al-Rumaihi became incensed and loudly screamed at Mr. Kwatinetz and threatened his life and his family, noting, ‘You don’t know who I know in LA and what they’re capable of’. ‘You should think of your safety and the safety of your family.’

Reportedly, that matter is now is in arbitration. The civil suit is a separate action, seeking a jury trial to recover approximately $20 million per player in harm to Big3 and its founders’ reputations.

Yikes! We hope Ice Cube and Jeff get a happy pay day. This is definitely why they say all money is not good money! We will keep you posted!

As co-owners, they’re in good company — rapper Macklemore and his wife, Tricia Davis, former Microsoft executive Terry Myerson and his wife, Katie Myerson, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and his wife, Anu Nadella, are also members of the ownership group.

“Seattle means so much to me and Ciara. We’re fired up about being part of the Sounders for a long, long time, having ownership in the Sounders and continuing to build that winning culture,” Russell Wilson said in a statement. “When I got here in 2012, Seattle was a place that I felt I could call home forever. And obviously because of the Seahawks, and now because of the Sounders, it makes that really come to life. We’re really excited about building that winning culture. This city is a special place.”

Ciara issued a statement of her own, saying, “This is not only a special moment for Russ and I, but for our kids as well. When we walked into the building and our kids were running around with their names on their little jerseys, it meant a lot for so many reasons. It’s an honor to join the Sounders team and have the unique opportunity to represent female ownership within major league sports.”

We are so happy for Ciara and Russell! They are both successful, have a beautiful family, and seem to be winning on so many levels. We love seeing Black Love perforate. What do you guys think of this big news for The Wilsons? Sound off in the comments’ section below!

Amara La Negra (@AmaraLaNegraALN) Praises Beyonce for “Brown Skin Girls,” Cites Blue Ivy As Justification

Beyonce definitely worked wonders on the original tracks she produced for Disney’s 2019 The Lion King remake soundtrack. One of the runaway hit singles from this album is none other than Brown Skin Girls,  a track that celebrates melanin and women of color with darker skin tones. Many felt as though Beyonce, being a lighter skinned woman, should not be able to sing or speak on the magnification or beauty of darker skinned women of color since she knew nothing of their experiences of colorism. Naturally, fans and The BeyHive , have come to her defense, and in that number includes Love & Hip-Hop Miami’s Amara La Negra.

In a recent interview with Kontrol Magazine, Amara states Beyonce as the mother of Blue Ivy, a brown skinned Black girl, being reason enough for her to create a song celebrating them and denouncing colorism. “I feel like people are reading too much into what she [Beyonce] is saying in the song. It’s very empowering and loving. Also, her own daughter is brown skinned, why wouldn’t she want to create something uplifting her. Let’s also not forget her father is dark skinned, she may have other darker skinned family members, and so is her band mate and best friend, Kelly [Rowland]. People just don’t know. Instead of continuously fighting about this issue we should be embracing it, the message of the song, and embracing one another…”

We definitely agree with Amara La Negra on this issue. She has fought against colorism since she was first introduced to the world via reality television and believes in the beauty of all people of color no matter their shade. Beyonce created a beautiful, uplifting some for a group of women who all too often are marginalized. You can catch her full interview with Kontrol Magazine coming soon! Thanks for speaking out Amara!
