Colorism, as defined by Dictionary.com, is “prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group.” This prejudice pervades the world and affects almost every ethnic group in the world. However, in the African-American community it has had serious psychological and emotional issues. It seems Black celebrities are not immune to this either as Mathew Knowles, Beyonce’s father and former manager states that have Beyonce’s career has benefited from her lighter skin tone, while her former group mate and best friend, Kelly Rowlan’s has suffered from her darker skin tone.

In the interview with “The Clay Cane Show” on SiriusXM Urban View, Knowles said he taught a college class that did its own research study on “colorism” in music spanning a period of 15 years and found that, “overwhelmingly,” light-skinned black women fared better than darker-toned divas, especially at Top 40 radio. Among the beneficiaries of the perceived bias cited by Knowles or Cane were Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce.

“In the music industry there’s still segregation,” said Knowles. “Programmers, especially at pop radio, have this imagery of what beauty looks like. … If you look back even at Whitney Houston, if you look at those photos, how they lightened her to make her look lighter-complexioned … Because there’s a perception and a colorism: the lighter that you are, the smarter and more economically (advantaged)… There’s a perception all around the world about color — even with black folks, there’s a perception.”

Asked by Cane if that prejudice toward lighter tones had any impact on Beyonce’s career, Knowles said, “I think she would have had — I think it would’ve affected her success. And I use Kelly Rowland as an example. She’s a great example. But you know, the great thing is, Kelly did exceptional outside of America, especially in Australia. Kelly sold over 4 million records. She just got off-script.”

Rowland has addressed the issue in the past. In 2013, in an interview with Cnikky.com, she acknowledge a period of insecurity about her look — even as it was coveted by many of her fans and admirers — and said, “You know what, I had great women in my life to help me overcome that. I remember I went through a period where I didn’t embrace my ‘chocolatiness.’” Rowland attributed her change of attitude in part to a conversation with Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles.

Mathew’s point of view, although disheartening, is not “new new.” Colorism is very much so still a part of an issue affecting African-Americans. It seems no matter how “woke” we currently are there are still issues in our own community to overcome and work through. Black is beautiful in every shade!

Duty calls! That is what seems to be implied as Queen Elizabeth has requested Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex, return to the United Kingdom for a royal event with their son Archie in tow.

As you recall, the royal couple decided to step away from being senior members of the British Royal Family after months of turmoil and mistreatment largely from the British press and tabloids. Some of the outlets even referred to their son as a monkey!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be returning to the U.K. next month for their last round of official royal engagements.

Queen Elizabeth II reportedly requested that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who will no longer be using their “royal highness” titles, join the royal family for the annual Commonwealth service at Westminster Abbey on March 9, according to The Sunday Times.

Meghan, 38, and Harry, 35, are expected to attend the event with their son Archie, who will have just turned 10 months old.

Following the appearance, the couple will return to Canada where they are beginning to settle into their new non-royal life after their decision to step down as senior members of the royal family.

We definitely hate Harry and Meghan have to deal with this, but wholeheartedly support their decision to do what is best for their marriage and their family. Let’s just hope the British press does not make this last round of royal events for them any harder.

The music industry is full of scandal and controversy, and it seems no one is above. The latest scandal involves Kelis accusing the producer duo, The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) of stealing profits from her first two albums!

“I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do,” she tells the U.K. newspaper, saying she was “blatantly lied to and tricked” by “The Neptunes and their management and their lawyers and all that stuff.”

Kelis claims she saw no money from the sales of her first two albums, which were produced by The Neptunes. It took her a few years to realize it because she was making money from touring, “and just the fact that I wasn’t poor felt like enough.”

She admits that she signed the contract, but was inexperienced at the time. “Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it,’” she says. “I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’”

While this is the first time she has gone public with the accusations, she did see Pharrell a few years ago while he was performing at an industry event. “And he did that thing to me that he’s notorious for, which is making a nod from the stage [to someone in the audience], so it seems like there’s mutual respect, when in reality …” she laughs. “I’m like, OK, I’m not going to yell back: ‘You stole all my publishing!’ So you end up nodding back and everyone thinks everything’s great. Like, whatever.”

But she isn’t angry about it. “To be honest with you, I think if it were not for my faith, I feel like that would probably be the case,” she says. “It’s very clear to me, especially being on a farm, that whatever you put in the ground, that is what’s going to come back to you.”

When asked if she would work with Pharrell again, she responds, “Ummm, at that point there’s having faith and there is also just stupidity.”

We really hope this is not true, or some misunderstanding brought on by someone not reading the fine print to their contract. Kelis is so talented and The Neptunes are awesome. Let us hope this can be cleared up or explained. Thus far neither of The Neptunes have responded to Kelis’s claims. We will keep you posted.

My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time. Thank you for all the prayers. We definitely need them. We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.
We are also devastated for the families who lost their loved ones on Sunday, and we share in their grief intimately.
There aren’t enough words to describe our pain right now. I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved. We were so incredibly blessed to have them in our lives. I wish they were here with us forever. They were our beautiful blessings taken from us too soon.
I’m not sure what our lives hold beyond today, and it’s impossible to imagine life without them. But we wake up each day, trying to keep pushing because Kobe, and our baby girl, Gigi, are shining on us to light the way. Our love for them is endless — and that’s to say, immeasurable. I just wish I could hug them, kiss them and bless them. Have them here with us, forever.
Thank you for sharing your joy, your grief and your support with us.

We ask that you grant us the respect and privacy we will need to navigate this new reality.
To honor our Team Mamba family, the Mamba Sports Foundation has set up the MambaOnThree Fund to help support the other families affected by this tragedy. To donate, please go to MambaOnThree.org.

Thank you so much for lifting us up in your prayers, and for loving Kobe, Gigi, Natalia, Bianka, Capri and me. #Mamba #Mambacita #GirlsDad #DaddysGirls #Family ??
